"The decision was made based on the knowledge of experts and taking into account the possibility of a greater tragedy due to the high-risk situation of the mine," said Honduran geologist Anibal Godoy at a press conference he offered with Copeco emergency management chief Moises Alvarado.
Three days after the cave-in, "there is a strong, bad odor of death within the mine . . . and that worries us," said Moises Alvarado, chief of the country's emergency commission. Eleven workers were able to flee immediately after Wednesday's collapse, and three others were rescued on Friday. - AP

Three workers rescued from collapsed Honduras mine
One of those rescued, Nehemias Mendez, 25, suffered an unspecified fracture, according to COPECO disaster relief agency chief Moises Alvarado. The others - Brayan Escalante, 18 and Bayron Maradiaga, 19 - were in good condition.
Moises Alvarado, the head of the country's emergency commission, said the rescued miners are in "relatively good health, though they are exhausted and showing signs of severe dehydration." One of the three suffered severe contusions.
Emergencies Commission director Moises Alvarado had said earlier Thursday that eight of the miners had been rescued and been taken to a hospital. He later said he was given incorrect information by a firefighter at the site.
