Kelley's attorney, Hugh McCloskey Jr., said that after talking the case over with Judge Nadine Allen, his client realized that a six-year sentence was the best deal he was going to get. Kelley had faced up to 20 years in prison.
In an emotional hearing in Hamilton County court, Judge Nadine Allen said that too many members of the public and some relatives are angry to allow Deandre Kelley, 34, to attend the funeral Saturday of young Shanti Lanza.
Hamilton County Judge Nadine Allen said in court Thursday that Deandre Kelley can't be released from jail because public safety trumps the grief he is experiencing. She says Kelley must "mourn symbolically."
