Abstract:

A very high pressure pump apparatus which minimizes wear on the seals thereof and on valves connected thereto, by utilizing a very long stroke piston rod whose opposite ends are received in long cylinders. An electric motor which drives the rod, includes a rotor with a threaded aperture that receives a long threaded middle portion of the rod, so that as the rotor turns it advances the rod.

Abstract:

A system and method for determining a curvature of a specularly reflective surface based on optical interference. Two optical gratings are used to produce a spatial displacement in an interference field of two different diffraction components produced by one grating from different diffraction components produced by another grating. Thus, the curvature of the surface can be determined.

Abstract:

A pump system of the reciprocating piston type is described, which facilitates direct motor drive and cylinder sealing. A threaded middle potion of the piston is engaged by a nut connected to rotate with the rotor of an electric motor, in a manner that minimizes loading on the rotor by the use of a coupling that transmits torque to the nut but permits it to shift axially and radially with respect to the rotor. The nut has a threaded hydrostatic bearing for engaging the threaded piston portion, with an oil-carrying groove in the nut being interrupted. A fluid emitting seal located at the entrance to each cylinder, can serve to center the piston within the cylinder, wash the piston, and to aid in sealing. The piston can have a long stroke to diameter ratio to minimize reciprocations and wear on valves at high pressures. The voltage applied to the motor can be reversed prior to the piston reaching the end of its stroke, to permit pressure on the piston to aid in reversing the motor.

Abstract:

A parcel cart for transporting parcels comprises a substructure, with a frame mounted to and supported by the substructure. The frame defines an internal volume in which parcels are received and stored for transport. The frame also includes: a base; a first end wall; a second end wall; a first side wall; and a second side wall. To facilitate loading or unloading of the parcel cart, the frame can include at least one end wall configured to transition between an upright position and a lowered position. To facilitate autonomous transport of the parcel cart, the substructure and the frame can define a cavity for receiving a mobile robot. To avoid occlusion of the field of view of one or more cameras associated with the mobile robot, the frame can include at least one end wall that is in a non-perpendicular orientation relative to the base.

Abstract:

A tubular array heat exchanger and a method of manufacturing the same are provided. The heat exchanger includes a plurality of tubes extending between a tube inlet and a tube outlet. An inlet manifold includes an inner wall and an outer wall defining an inlet plenum and one or more baffles extending between the inner wall and the outer wall to divide the inlet plenum into a plurality of fluid passageways, each of the plurality of fluid passageways extending between the inlet plenum and a respective one of the tube inlets. The tubes, the inlet manifold, and an outlet manifold identical to the inlet manifold are manufactured as a single monolithic component.

Abstract:

A tubular array heat exchanger and a method of manufacturing the same are provided. The heat exchanger includes a plurality of helical tubes defining a primary diameter around the centerline to define interstitial voids between the plurality of tubes. The plurality of tubes defines an increased surface area compared to a single heat transfer tube having the same primary diameter, thereby resulting in improved heat transfer efficiency or a smaller footprint. In addition, the helically formed tubes and optional stiffening structures improve the structural resiliency of the heat exchanger to better absorb thermal expansion and contraction with improved modal response.
