    The present invention concerns a system for utilizing radio frequency signals to dynamically determine the location of a medical device throughout a procedure and to improve navigation of the medical device. For these purposes, a plurality of RF receivers are mounted at operative locations in the operating room and operate on the same clock signal. The system also utilizes a diagnostic medical image such as an MRI, and overlays the position feedback signal on the image. This allows, for example, a surgeon to pick a desired spot on the diagnostic image, and then cause a robotic arm driven device to be moved to that particular spot inside the human body.

    A spinal plating system for vertebral fixation includes a plate, a compression screw, multiple fixation members and polyaxially adjustable locking rings. The plate is shaped to conform to the curvature of the spine and the surfaces of the vertebral bodies. The compression screw fits through an insert, and together they are guided by the plate as the screw is driven into one of the vertebrae, producing compression between the adjacent vertebrae. A retaining lip on the plate prevents backout of the compression screw. The polyaxial locking rings can be polyaxially pivoted to attain a desired orientation, and are lockable to the plate to maintain the orientation. The fixation members fit through openings in the polyaxial locking rings and the plate to fix the plate to the vertebrae. Locking the polyaxial locking rings fixes the position of the fixation members relative to the plate, and prevents backout of the fixation members.

  • Abstract:
    A cannulated and possibly fenestrated device for injection of material into bone can be dangerous because large, uncontrolled pressures are introduced during injection into a somewhat closed system, and material may extrude undesirably or emboli may be introduced. Methods and devices are described for providing venting of pressure upon injection of material through cannulated and possibly fenestrated screws. The first method involves a bone screw and/or anchor device that includes multiple channels to allow material to flow in through one channel and out through another channel. The second method involves a plunger that can force material into bone if advanced or lessen pressure if withdrawn. The third method involves usage of two separate screws. Material is alternately injected or withdrawn from each screw to cause material to flow from one screw to the other in a controlled way that creates a uniform or asymmetrical distribution of material as desired.

Each of the first and second housing members may include at least one pivot portion that defines the contact surfaces.
