Abstract:
The restricted use of a cellular network to facilitate disablement of a device that is suspected lost or stolen. Accordingly, even if the device is not capable of general use of the cellular network, disablement communications are still permitted across the cellular network. Accordingly, the device may receive a disable command from the disablement service over the cellular network, and acknowledge processing of the disable command to the disablement service also over the cellular network. Thus, efforts by an unauthorized possessor of the device to prevent disablement by removing the physical authentication module are thwarted. Likewise, turning the cellular service off using software settings at the device also does not prevent the device from being disabled via cellular network communication.

Abstract:
Active disablement of a target device that is reported as lost or stolen, even if the device no longer has a cellular link. A service assembles a list of target devices that have been reported as lost or stolen, and transmits at least a subset of the assembled list of target devices to candidate proximate systems. If one of the candidate proximate system receives an identification signal from a target device that is on the received list, the proximate system commands the target device to at least partially disable itself. The target device then disables as commanded, and the proximate system may acknowledge the same to the service.

Abstract:
Embodiments are directed to efficiently recovering an electronic device. In one scenario, a computer system determines that a user's electronic device is in a lost or stolen state. The computer system sends a notification to the electronic device indicating multiple different methods of returning the electronic device to the electronic device's manufacturer. Upon receiving the electronic device, the computer system identifies the owner of the electronic device, determines how to provide the electronic device to the identified owner, and provides the electronic device to the identified owner in the determined manner.
