Abstract:An extrusion apparatus is taught that employs a die adapter that is partially submerged in a heat transfer bath on a horizontal plane such that there is no air gap between the die extrusion aperture and the heat transfer bath. A porous dam is positioned between the die and the heat transfer bath. A heat insulating plate is positioned between the porous dam and the die to prevent the heat transfer medium from flowing onto the die. The heat insulating plate also prevents excessive cooling of the die tip thereby allowing the necessary precise thermal control over the extrudate skin formation to prevent melt fracture and form a low density extrudate with a smooth solid skin and inner foamed core.

Abstract:A mixing apparatus for the treatment of a plurality of flowable components. The apparatus comprises an elongated housing having an upper component-introduction end and a downstream compound-discharge end. An elongated shaft is rotatably disposed within an elongated bore disposed within the housing. The shaft has a stator and rotor arrangement spaced longitudinally therearound. At least one rotor has an arrangement of fluid channeling conduits spaced apart on an annular surface thereof, wherein the conduit is of tapering narrowing dimension from a first longitudinal side of the rotor to a second longitudinal side of the rotor.

Abstract:A method of mixing of plurality of compounds on a single screw extrusion machine comprises the steps of attaching a barrel of a dynamic mixer apparatus onto the down stream end of a barrel of the extrusion machine, arranging a support shaft in the dynamic mixer apparatus to rotatively carry a plurality of rotors and stators within the dynamic mixer barrel, machining at least one introduction port through the dynamic mixer barrel at a position radially adjacent a rotor and attaching a satellite extrusion mixer to the introduction port so that additives may be introduced at a desired location best suited for the additive. Additionally, the introduction port may used as a withdrawal port to take samples of the mix. Alternately, the rotor of the dynamic mixer may be positioned to present a shaft with a rotor of opposite hand to provide a flow retarding characteristic.
