Abstract:

Bacitracin zinc is effective to promote regenerative healing when topically applied to wounds in concentrations from about 5% to 8%. The bacitracin zinc can be applied in a hydrophilic or hydrophobic carrier, and is advantageously impregnated in an absorbent pad.

Abstract:

A multi-layer wound dressing is provided which facilitates wound healing by creating hypoxia followed, after 3 to 72 hours, by an aerobic environment. The dressing is made of (a) a low-oxygen permeability outer layer; (b) an oxygen permeable inner layer, affixed on one side to the outer layer; and (c) an adhesive applied to the other side of the inner layer. The adhesive may be applied in a continuous or discontinuous manner, and may be applied only around the perimeter of the dressing, leaving an adhesive-free window. The entire dressing is applied to the wound and creates a hypoxic environment until the outer low oxygen permeability layer is removed after 3 to 72 hours. The oxygen permeable layer is left on to provide protection during a subsequent aerobic healing phase.

Abstract:

The invention provides a method of treating wounds in accordance with stages in the healing process by providing environments ideally suited to each stage of chronic wound repair. These environments are designed to improve cell and enzyme function. In the first phase of the treatment, the wound is treated with a debridement dressing which creates an acidic, hypoxic, warm and airtight environment. The debridement dressing comprises a hydrocolloid adhesive combination containing from about 35% to 50% pectin or other hydrocolloid or hydrophilic particle capable of reducing the pH, and further includes a means for monitoring the pH at the wound/dressing interface without removing the dressing. The second phase of the wound treatment is designed to enhance regeneration and provide natural protection against pathogenic invasion. The regeneration dressing used in this phase of treatment comprises a hydrocolloid adhesive containing 5% to 10% pectin to provide wet tack and 30% to 60% of a highly absorptive hydrocolloid or hydrophilic material such as sodium carboxymethylcellulose.
