In preferred embodiments, the stopgap structure is more spherically symmetric than periodic structures facilitating the formation of stopgaps in nearly all directions because of higher rotational symmetries. In preferred embodiments, the structure is heterostructure comprising dielectric materials arranged in two-dimensional space such that the overall structure is more rotationally symmetric than periodic structures.     This invention relates generally to devices constructed from quasicrystalline heterostructures. In preferred embodiments, two or more dielectric materials are arranged in a two- or three-dimensional space in a lattice pattern having at least a five-fold symmetry axis and not a six-fold symmetry axis, such that the quasicrystalline heterostructure exhibits an energy band structure in the space, the band structure having corresponding symmetry, which symmetry is forbidden in crystals, and which band structure comprises a complete band gap. The constructed devices are adapted for manipulating, controlling, modulating, trapping, reflecting and otherwise directing waves including electromagnetic, sound, spin, and surface waves, for a pre-selected range of wavelengths propagating within or through the heterostructure in multiple directions.

    A method and apparatus is disclosed for providing shear-induced alignment of nanostructures, such as spherical nanodomains, self-assembled nanodomains, and particles, in thin films, such as block copolymer (BCP) thin films. A silicon substrate is provided, and a thin film is formed on the substrate. A pad is then applied to the thin film, and optionally, a weight can be positioned on the pad. Optionally, a thin fluid layer can be formed between the pad and the thin film to transmit shear stress to the thin film. The thin film is annealed and the pad slid in a lateral direction with respect to the substrate to impart a shear stress to the thin film during annealing. The shear stress aligns the nanostructures in the thin film. After annealing and application of the shear stress, the pad is removed, and the nanostructures are uniformly aligned.

    While gold wire grids have been used to polarize infrared wavelengths for over a hundred years, they are not appropriate for shorter wavelengths due to their large period. With embodiments of the present invention, grids with periods a few tens of nanometers can be fabricated. Among other things, such grids can be used to polarize visible and even ultraviolet light. As a result, such wire grid polarizers have a wide variety of applications and uses, such as, e.g., in the fabrication of semiconductors, nanolithography, and more.
