    view source
  • US Patent:
    8423130, Apr 16, 2013
  • Filed:
    Oct 23, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/256819
  • Inventors:
James Thrower - Oakland NJ, US
Paul Goode - Cherry Hill NJ, US
Shai Policker - Tenafly NJ, US
    Anat Kliger - Tel-Aviv, IL
  • Assignee:
    Metacure Limited - Hamilton
  • International Classification:
    A61B 5/05
  • US Classification:
    600547
  • Abstract:
A method is provided that includes providing a fundic impedance signal of a subject sensed during an initial calibration period using at least one implantable fundic sensor of an eating detection device. An indication is received of actual ingestion events of the subject during the initial calibration period. Using a cost function, an analysis is performed of the fundic impedance signal and the actual ingestion events. Responsively to the analysis, a threshold is set, the crossing of which by the fundic impedance signal is indicative of ingestion. The threshold is stored in a memory of the eating detection device. Other embodiments are also described.

  • International Classification:
    A61N 1/36
    A61B 5/00
    A61N 1/05
  • Abstract:
The present specification discloses devices and methodologies for the treatment of GERD. Individuals with GERD may be treated by implanting a stimulation device within the patient's lower esophageal sphincter and applying electrical stimulation to the patient's lower esophageal sphincter, in accordance with certain predefined protocols. The presently disclosed devices have a simplified design because they do not require sensing systems capable of sensing when a person is engaged in a wet swallow, have improved energy storage requirements, enable improved LES function while concurrently delivering additional health benefits, and enable improved LES function post stimulation termination.
  • Laparoscopic Lead Implantation Method

  • US Patent:
    20190054291, Feb 21, 2019
  • Filed:
    Feb 7, 2018
  • Appl. No.:
    15/891209
  • Inventors:
    - Dallas TX, US
Shai Policker - Tenafly NJ, US
Paul V. Goode - Round Rock TX, US
Ofer Glasberg - Zichron Ya'akov, IL

    A61N 1/05
    A61B 17/04
    A61B 17/00
    A61B 1/313
  • Abstract:
A method of laparoscopically implanting an electrically stimulating lead proximate the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) of a patient includes delivering the lead through a port of a laparoscope inserted into the abdominal cavity of the patient through an incision in the abdominal wall. The stimulating electrode is implanted in or proximate the muscularis layer of the lower esophageal wall to treat esophageal reflux disease (GERD). The lead includes a needle and suture at its distal end for pulling the electrode into the muscular wall of the LES. Clips are applied to the suture attached to the distal end of the lead to prevent retrograde movement of the electrode. The lead also includes an anchoring member for anchoring the portion of the lead proximal to the electrode. The method and lead used with the method allow the surgeon to work within the confined anatomy present at the gastroesophageal junction and prevents backwards movement and dislodgment of the electrode. The implantation procedure can be combined with a hiatal hernia repair to repair the hernia and prevent recurrence of a hiatal hernia.
  • Methods And Systems Of Electrode Polarity Switching In Electrical Stimulation Therapy

  • US Patent:
    20180296838, Oct 18, 2018
  • Filed:
    Oct 26, 2017
  • Appl. No.:
    15/794209
  • Inventors:
    - Dallas TX, US

  • International Classification:
    A61N 1/36
    A61B 5/00
  • Abstract:
Methods for electrically stimulating body tissues to improve function or reduce symptoms provide an electrical stimulation system having two or more electrodes that are capable of being switched independently from a hyperpolarizing (depolarizing) state to a hypopolarizing state. Multiple combinations of hyperpolarizing electrodes and hypopolarizing electrodes are created by polarity switching to determine a polarity configuration having the best performance as determined by symptom reporting and clinical diagnostic tests. Polarity switching is triggered manually or is programmed to be switched automatically. Determining the configuration providing electrical stimulation resulting in the greatest benefit allows the system to be operated with one or more electrodes in a hypopolarizing state, thereby reducing energy requirements, tissue tolerance, and tissue fatigue.

  • Abstract:
A method of implanting electrically conductive leads in the gastrointestinal musculature for stimulation of target tissues involves an endoscopic approach through the esophagus. An endoscope is inserted into the esophagus of a patient. The mucosal surface of the anterior esophagus is punctured in the region encompassing the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). A tunnel is created through the submucosa and exits at the muscularis propria, adventitia, or serosal side of the stomach. The lead is navigated further to the anterior abdominal wall. A first end of the lead remains within the gastrointestinal musculature while a second end of the lead is positioned just outside the anterior abdominal wall. The first end of the lead comprises at least one electrode. An implantable pulse generator (IPG) is implanted and operably connected to the second end of the lead to provide electrical stimulation to target tissues.
