Disclosed are methods for identifying individuals predisposed to essential hypertension and related conditions such as salt sensitivity by detecting the presence of polymorphic or mutant forms of the GRK4 gene, or its expression product. Abstract:

It was determined whether SNPs in SLC4A5 are associated with salt sensitivity of blood pressure (BP). Subjects consumed an isocaloric constant diet with a randomized order of 7 days low Na (10 mmol/d) and 7 days high Na (300 mmol/d) intake. Salt sensitivity was defined as a ≧7 mm Hg increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP). 35 polymorphisms in 17 candidate genes were assayed.
