Jack H. Eichler - Westport CT
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • Assignee:
    Dorr-Oliver Incorporated - Stamford CT
  • International Classification:
    B01D 2924
    B01D 2938
  • US Classification:
    210791
  • Abstract:
A pressure filter for separating a liquor from mud liquor slurry and for concentrating a filter cake as a heavy slurry discharge comprising a tank having a ring of filter elements supported by a plate which separates the filter tank from a filtrate chamber. The feed enters the tank under pressure through an enlarged feed cylinder tube located in the center of the ring of filter elements. In the backwashing mode of operation the feed rate is maintained or increased to assist in displacing filter cake from the filter elements.
  • Apparatus For Dissolution Of Gases In Liquid

    view source
  • US Patent:
    44669283, Aug 21, 1984
  • Filed:
    Jul 27, 1982
  • Appl. No.:
    6/402410
  • Inventors:
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • Assignee:
    Dorr-Oliver Incorporated - Stamford CT
  • International Classification:
    B01F 304
  • US Classification:
    261 76
  • Abstract:
A treatment system for liquids includes apparatus for dissolving gas in the liquid and a container for providing the necessary reaction time between the gas and liquid or constituents thereof. The device for dissolving the gas in the liquid includes gas injection means for introducing gas into the liquid and a contact chamber for containing a downflowing stream of the liquid to be treated. The pressure within the downflowing stream increases as it descends and at the elevated pressure the capacity of the liquid to take gas into solution is greatly increased. This apparatus for dissolving gas may conveniently be located below ground level. A conduit return means is provided for routing undissolved gas from a region at high pressure to an upstream portion of the liquid stream so that the gas can be reintroduced for dissolution.
  • Method Of Exhausting Dissolved Oxygen In A Nitrogen Removal Wastewater Treatment Process

    view source
  • US Patent:
    51600439, Nov 3, 1992
  • Filed:
    Sep 9, 1991
  • Appl. No.:
    7/756501
  • Inventors:
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • Assignee:
    I. Kruger, Inc. - Cary NC
  • International Classification:
    C02F 330
  • US Classification:
    210605
  • Abstract:
The present invention relates to a nitrogen removal wastewater treatment process and system that entails an anoxic treatment zone followed by an oxic treatment zone with internal recycle of mixed liquor from the oxic treatment zone to the preceding anoxic treatment zone. Prior to recycling the nitrified mixed liquor back into the anoxic zone, the mixed liquor is held within a dissolved oxygen exhauster tank for a selected period of time where the dissolved oxygen concentration of the nitrified mixed liquor is substantially reduced to preferably below 0. 5 ppm.
  • Method For Biologically Removing Nitrogen From Wastewater

    view source
  • US Patent:
    52136817, May 25, 1993
  • Filed:
    Sep 9, 1991
  • Appl. No.:
    7/756440
  • Inventors:
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • Assignee:
    T. Kruger, Inc. - Cary NC
  • International Classification:
    C02F 330
  • US Classification:
    210605
  • Abstract:
The present invention relates to a system and method for biologically removing nitrogen from wastewater. Both the system and method entails forming a mixed liquor and transferring the mixed liquor to a series of nitrogen removal stages. Each nitrogen removal stage includes both anoxic and aerobic treatment zones. Mixed liquor is recycled back and forth between the anoxic and aerobic treatment zone of each stage. Because of this basic flow scheme, the process gives rise to a high reactor rate and highly efficient nitrogen removal process.
  • Method And System For Improved Biological Nitrification Of Wastewater At Low Temperature

    view source
  • US Patent:
    58110097, Sep 22, 1998
  • Filed:
    Jun 25, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/882607
  • Inventors:
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • International Classification:
    C02F 330
  • US Classification:
    210605
  • Abstract:
The present invention entails a method and system for enhancing biological nitrification in a wastewater treatment process. The process entails both a mainstream wastewater process and a sidestream process wherein the sidestream process produces an abundant supply of supplemental nitrifiers that are in turn directed into the mainstream for assisting in carrying out the nitrification process in the mainstream. Specifically, the sidestream process includes directing a liquid stream (such as a dewatering liquid) having a high ammonia concentration at an elevated temperature into a sidestream nitrification zone which is operated at conditions which maximize production of nitrifiers therein. Afterwards, the resulting nitrifiers produced in the sidestream nitrification zone are directed into the mainstream where the nitrifiers function to enhance nitrification in the mainstream and allows operation at low sludge retention time conditions where nitrification otherwise could not be sustained.
  • Apparatus And Method For The Gravity Settling Of Suspended Solids

    view source
  • US Patent:
    42631378, Apr 21, 1981
  • Filed:
    Nov 19, 1979
  • Appl. No.:
    6/095244
  • Inventors:
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • Assignee:
    Dorr-Oliver Incorporated - Stamford CT
  • International Classification:
    B01D 2124
  • US Classification:
    210800
  • Abstract:
An apparatus and method for improving the settling out of suspended solids in a liquor are described. A diffuser of a particular type is used to introduce a liquor containing a flocculant suspension into a sedimentation tank with low turbulence. The diffuser is so shaped that the liquor velocity can be reduced in a controlled manner. Liquid shear conditions are made so low inside the diffuser that excessive break-up of flocs does not occur. The diffuser has a flare angle and a discharge opening to throat dimensional ratio whereby these conditions of low turbulence and formation can be established. Several embodiments of sedimentation apparatus employing such diffuser are described.
  • Flow Distributor For Fluid Bed Biological Reactor

    view source
  • US Patent:
    42027748, May 13, 1980
  • Filed:
    May 24, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/909076
  • Inventors:
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • Assignee:
    Dorr-Oliver Incorporated - Stamford CT
  • International Classification:
    B01D 2318
    B01D 4102
  • US Classification:
    210274
  • Abstract:
A flow distributor for a fluid bed reactor includes means for decreasing velocity of incoming liquid streams in a uniform, non-turbulent fashion. Inlet ports communicate with fluid portals having divergent walls to slow incoming flow. The fluid portals feed liquid flow to a plurality of diffusing flow paths provided between diffusion baffles positioned at the bottom of the reactor. The diffusion baffles may be prismatic shapes which are trapezoidal in cross-section with the broadest horizontal dimension at the bottom thereof. The diffusion flow paths therefore have divergent walls and act to further slow the liquid flow passing therethrough.
  • Dental Flosser And Dental Floss

    view source
  • US Patent:
    48279528, May 9, 1989
  • Filed:
    Oct 27, 1987
  • Appl. No.:
    7/114305
  • Inventors:
    Peter Kos - Ridgefield CT
  • International Classification:
    A61C 1504
  • US Classification:
    132323
  • Abstract:
A dental flosser is described wherein a pair of floss-holding arms can be moved in parallel motion so as to enhance the cleaning action of a dental floss. The dental floss is provided with beads that releasably engage the arm ends in tension in a manner so that vigorous action of the dental flosser does not release the floss, yet enables its easy removal after use. The dental flosser is formed of a convenient unitary plastic structure in which movable components are affixed with live hinges. Various beaded dental floss forms are described.
