Abstract:

A surgical fastener application apparatus for applying surgical fasteners of general U-shape to body tissue is provided which includes a housing having a handle portion and a trigger mechanism, an elongated body portion extending from the housing, the elongated body portion having generally annular cross-sectional area substantially along the length thereof and defining a longitudinal pathway therein, and a firing mechanism operatively connected to the housing and including a pair of substantially parallel push rods positioned within the longitudinal pathway of the elongated body portion, the firing mechanism being capable of driving a surgical fastener inserted in a distal end portion of elongated body portion to the body tissue in response to operation of the trigger mechanism.

Abstract:

A knotless suture anchor and method for its insertion into tissue are provided. The suture anchor includes an inner member including a proximal shaft and a distal securing member shaped to secure the inner member to the tissue, the proximal shaft including a first locking part and at least one hole extending therethrough for receiving the suture thread; and a collar member including an axial bore shaped to receive the proximal shaft of the inner member, a second locking part, and at least one hole extending therethrough and assigned to the hole of the proximal shaft of the inner member, the collar member being axially slidable into unlocked and locked positions relative to the proximal shaft of the inner member, the collar member being relatively axially slidable into the locked position only to secure the suture thread. The hole of the collar member is aligned with the hole of the proximal shaft of the inner member when the collar member is placed into the unlocked position, the hole of the collar member is misaligned with the hole of the proximal shaft of the inner member when the collar member is placed into the locked position, and the first locking part of the proximal shaft engages with the second locking part of the collar member to axially lock the collar member with respect to the proximal shaft when the collar member is placed into the locked position.

Abstract:

A dual pump irrigation/aspiration pump system capable of operating in a plurality of different modes suitable for a variety of different endoscopic surgical procedures. The system monitors actual or calculated intra-articular pressure and adjusts flow to maintain surgeon requested pressure at the surgical site while controlling outflow. The irrigation/aspiration pump system has an inflow pump and tubing dedicated to communicating fluid to the surgical work site and an outflow pump and tubing dedicated to removing fluid from the work site at a controlled rate. The system further has different size inflow and outflow pumps and tubing cassettes, means for altering the outflow fluid flow rate to accommodate a surgical tool and a means for declogging the surgical tool in the event of blockage. In a preferred embodiment a pressure control system provides inferred pressure information representative of the pressure at the work site.

Abstract:

A suture cutting device is provided, the device suitable for cutting high strength suture materials used in arthroscopic surgeries. The device includes a distal blade portion movable within a distal suture guide, the distal suture guide including a lateral suture guide slot. The distal blade portion includes a dorsal recess that, in combination with an upper wall of an enclosed blade guide slot, controls an amount of dorsal movement of a cutting edge during a longitudinal movement of the cutting edge. The combined dorsal movement and longitudinal movement of the cutting edge creating a sliding/slicing movement of the cutting edge against a suture in the suture guide slot. At least a proximal blade portion and an extension blade portion are made of a single blade, those portions defining a spring, contacting a trigger, and effectuating a movement from a first position to a second position.

A cannula and cannula driver system comprises a tubular cannula and a driver, the driver comprising an elongated obturator shaft and a handle. A noncircular recess is formed on one of the of the cannula and the obturator shaft which receives a correspondingly-shaped projection formed about the other of the cannula and obturator shaft, so that when the obturator shaft is inserted into the tubular cannula, the projection fits into the recess, whereby torque applied to the handle of the driver is transferred to the cannula.

Abstract:

A meniscal repair system including a pair of elongate needles with a suture filament attached between respective proximal ends of the needles. Two implants are attached to the suture (e.g., molded thereon) between the needles so as to form a suture bridge between the implants. One implant may comprise a barbed shaft aligned with the suture, while the other may be in the form of a T-bar that can be deployed so as to be perpendicular to a portion of the suture filament. The system may further include one or more dilators (e.g., one or more suture knots or molded beads) disposed along the length of the suture filament to aid in passage of the implant after the associated needle.
