Abstract:

The invention comprises an assembleable mantelpiece, which includes a mantel, a pair of side members, and means for positioning and securing the mantel and pair of side members relative to each other and relative to a fireplace, so as to enable the mantelpiece to be manufactured, shipped and stored disassembled, and assembled and installed relative to a fireplace conveniently and efficiently, without subjecting the mantelpiece to possible damage resulting previously from installation thereof, and without requiring finishing necessary previously as a consequence of such installation thereof.

Abstract:

An intelligent asynchronous controller (IAC) for use in operably coupling a plurality of asynchronous input/output (I/O) devices to a host central processing unit (CPU) is disclosed. The IAC is designed and programmed to control the transfer of data between the plurality of I/O devices and the CPU, to perform character processing on the data received from the I/O devices before transmission to the host CPU and to perform other types of data processing. The IAC is organized around a central processor bus and includes a host interface section which serves as a communication link between the host CPU and the central processor bus, a processor unit which controls the overall operations of the IAC and which contains a date manipulation section and a control processor section, a memory section for providing local read/write storage for the processor along with read only storage for use on power up and certain other instances, a communications interface section for interfacing the IAC with the plurality of I/O devices, a status section for providing certain status indications for the IAC and a power supply section. The host interface section features an internal mapping unit (IMU) which expands the fifteen bit address provided by the processor section to the nineteen bit address of the CPU bus. The processor section features a processor which is capable of processing upwards of 5000 characters a second.

Abstract:

A computer network, and preferably a network concentrator, with a bidirectional serial channel. A plurality of devices on the channel are identified by addresses. The devices are divided into device groups and a device in one group can have an address which is identical to a device in another group. A management processor communicates with the individual devices by digital signaling through an analog multiplexer. The management processor decides which device group to communicate with, and then either generates a selection signal, or sends a data packet to a device register to generate a selection signal which causes the analog multiplexer to connect the bidirectional serial channel of the management processor to the bidirectional serial channel of the proper device group.

Abstract:

A method of repeatedly indicating to a user of an appliance that a water filter unit operably connected to the appliance has passed its useful life and a filter unit configure for use in connection with the method where the filter unit includes a fluid flow impeding system within a housing of the filter unit; engaging the filter unit with the appliance; measuring the volume of water treated by the filter unit; activating a fluid flow impeding system contained within the housing of the filter unit; and repeatedly indicating to a user that the maximum volume of water the filter unit has been designed to treat has been surpassed and the filter unit should be replaced by repeatedly delivering a normal flow rate of water from the dispenser of the appliance and thereafter slowing the flow of water from the dispenser of the appliance.
