Abstract:

An electro-optical scanning unit adapted to sense a bar-code pattern and to generate digital signals corresponding thereto. In the unit, an incandescent light source acts to illuminate a narrow slit, and a reduced image thereof is optically projected to produce a luminous scanning line in a focal plane. An oscillating scanning mechanism interposed in the projection path causes the luminous line to sweep back and forth. The focal plane lies within a window formed in a channel dimensioned to receive an item bearing a bar-code pattern and to locate this pattern so that the bars lie in parallel relation to the luminous line, whereby when the line is swept across the pattern and is reflected thereby, the resultant light pulses are directed toward a photo-detector and converted to corresponding digital signals.

Aspects of the technology can include cooling a surface of a patient's skin and detecting changes in the tissue. The tissue can be cooled a sufficient length of time and to a temperature low enough to affect glands or other targeted structures in the skin.

Abstract:

An insert to be used with footwear is provided. In one implementation, the insert includes a structural member that has a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The first surface is shaped to correspond with contours of a user foot. The second surface is adapted to rest on substantially planar surface. The insert includes a recessed cavity defining an opening from the first surface to the second surface of the structural member. The recessed cavity is shaped to stabilize a region of the user foot placed within the opening. An intermediate layer is attached to the structural member in a mating relationship with respect to the first surface. This foam layer is adapted to distribute a determined amount of foot pressure from the user foot with respect to the structural member.

Abstract:

Systems for treating a subject's tissue can include a thermally conductive cup, a tissue-receiving cavity, and a vacuum port. The vacuum port is in fluid communication with the tissue-receiving cavity to provide a vacuum for drawing the submental tissue, or other targeted tissue, into the tissue-receiving cavity. A thermal device can cool and/or heat the conductive cup such that the conductive cup non-invasively controls the temperature of subcutaneous lipid-rich cells in the tissue. A restraint apparatus can hold a the conductive cup in thermal contact with the target region.
