  • Filed:
    Mar 7, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/044502
  • Inventors:
Philip W Mock - Newport Beach CA, US
Duane Bloom - Anaheim CA, US
Norman Bruce Moore - Aliso Viejo CA, US
  • Assignee:
Western Well Tool, Inc. - Anaheim CA
  • International Classification:
    E21B 4/18
    E21B 4/00
  • US Classification:
    175 57, 175 51, 175 76, 175 99
  • Abstract:
A hydraulically powered tractor adapted for advancement through a borehole including an elongate body, aft and forward gripper assemblies, and a valve control assembly housed within the elongate body. The aft and forward gripper assemblies are adapted for selective engagement with the inner surface of the borehole. The valve control assembly includes a gripper control valve for directing pressurized fluid to the aft and forward gripper assemblies. The valve control assembly also includes a propulsion control valve for directing fluid to an aft or forward power chamber for advancing the body relative to the actuated gripper assembly. Aft and forward mechanically actuated valves may be provided for controlling the position of the gripper control valve by detecting and signaling when the body has completed an advancement stroke relative to an actuated gripper assembly. Aft and forward sequence valves may be provided for controlling the propulsion control valve by detecting when the gripper assemblies become fully actuated. Furthermore, a pressure relief valve is preferably provided along an input supply line for limiting the pressure of the fluid entering the valve control assembly.

  • US Patent:
    7607497, Oct 27, 2009
  • Filed:
    Jun 30, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/165210
  • Inventors:
Philip W. Mock - Newport Beach CA, US
    N. Bruce Moore - Aliso Viejo CA, US
Duane Bloom - Anaheim CA, US
  • Assignee:
Western Well Tool, Inc. - Anaheim CA
  • International Classification:
    E21B 4/18
  • US Classification:
    175 99, 175 98, 166212, 166217
  • Abstract:
An expandable gripper assembly may be configured for anchoring a tool in a passage. The expandable gripper assembly includes first, second, and third pivotally connected links that are coupled to a tool. The third link is adapted to engage an inner wall in the passage. An actuation mechanism causes the third link to move radially outward from the tool for engagement with the inner wall. The actuation mechanism may comprise a roller mechanism that pushes on an inner surface of the first link for causing the first link to pivot outward away from the body. As the first and second links pivot outward, the third link moves in a radial direction for engagement with an inner wall.

  • US Patent:
    7854275, Dec 21, 2010
  • Filed:
    Jan 5, 2009
  • Appl. No.:
    12/348770
  • Inventors:
Philip Wayne Mock - Costa Mesa CA, US
  • Assignee:
Western Well Tool, Inc. - Anaheim CA
  • International Classification:
    E21B 17/07
  • US Classification:
    175 57, 175 27, 175321
  • Abstract:
An anti-stall tool in an oil well drilling assembly that controls reciprocation of the drill bit by a controller that alters weight-on-bit (WOB) depending upon measured downhole pressure or torque. The downhole controller keeps the drill bit rotating by maintaining WOB during normal drilling operations, increasing WOB if sensed working pressure indicates that drill bit loading or torque is undesirably low, and reversing WOB by applying a spring force for retracting the drill bit if excessive working pressure or torque is sensed.

  • Inventors:
Philip Wayne Mock - Costa Mesa CA, US
  • Assignee:

  • International Classification:
    E21B 19/086
  • US Classification:
    175 27, 175321
  • Abstract:
An anti-stall tool in an oil well drilling assembly that controls reciprocation of the drill bit by a controller that alters weight-on-bit (WOB) depending upon measured downhole pressure or torque at the downhole motor. The controller receives preset high and low working pressure limits for the downhole motor and keeps the drill bit rotating by maintaining WOB during normal drilling operations, increasing WOB if sensed working pressure indicates that drill bit loading or torque is undesirably low, and reversing WOB by retracting the drill bit if excessive working pressure or torque is sensed.

  • Methods And Apparatuses For Inhibiting Rotational Misalignment Of Assemblies In Expandable Well Tools

  • US Patent:
    8485278, Jul 16, 2013
  • Filed:
    Sep 21, 2010
  • Appl. No.:
    12/887389
  • Inventors:
Philip W. Mock - Costa Mesa CA, US
  • Assignee:
WWT International, Inc. - Anaheim CA
  • International Classification:
    E21B 23/04
  • US Classification:
    175 51, 1753251
  • Abstract:
A gripper for use in a downhole tool is provided. The gripper can include an actuator, an engagement assembly, and an expandable assembly. The engagement assembly can comprise a leaf-spring like elongate continuous beam. The expandable assembly can comprise a linkage including a plurality of links. The linkage can be coupled to the actuator such that the actuator expands the expandable assembly which in turn expands the engagement assembly. One or more keyed connections can inhibit rotational misalignment of the expandable assembly from the engagement assembly. In operation, during one stage of expansion radial forces are transmitted to the engagement assembly through both interaction of a rolling mechanism on the engagement assembly with the expandable assembly and pressure of the linkage assembly directly on an inner surface of the engagement assembly. The one or more keyed connections can preferably facilitate full retraction of the expandable and engagement assemblies.
