Abstract:

A process for the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of the multiple condensed ring heterocyclic organosulfur compounds present in petroleum and chemical streams. The stream is passed through at least one reaction zone countercurrent to the flow of a hydrogen-containing treat gas, and through at least one sorbent zone. The reaction zone contains a bed of Group VIII metal-containing hydrodesulfurization catalyst and the sorbent zone contains a bed of hydrogen sulfide sorbent material.

Abstract:

A diesel fraction is purified by a process having two reaction stages and a stripping stage in a single vessel. Heteroatoms are removed in the first stage, to permit the use of a sulfur sensitive aromatics saturation catalyst in the second stage, to produce a purified diesel stock. The first stage liquid effluent is stripped in a stripping stage and then passed into the second reaction stage, in which it reacts with fresh hydrogen for aromatics removal. The second reaction stage produces a hydrogen-rich vapor effluent, which may provide all or a portion of the first stage reaction hydrogen. A noble metal catalyst is employed in the second stage. The diesel feed for the process may be one that has been at least partially refined with respect to either or both heteroatom or aromatics removal.

Abstract:

A hydrocarbonaceous feed is hydroprocessed in a single vessel containing two reaction stages and a stripping stage. The feed is fed into the first reaction stage to produce a vapor and liquid effluent which are separated, and the liquid stripped. The stripped liquid is passed as feed into the second stage, in which it meets with fresh hydrogen to produce a hydroprocessed liquid product and a hydrogen-rich vapor. The vapor is passed into the first stage, to provide the hydrogen for that stage. The use of a single vessel provides an efficient and economical addition to, or replacement for, a vessel for an existing hydroprocessing facility.

Abstract:

The invention is directed to a bypass device for extending the operating life of fixed bed reactors. The device may be placed within a fixed catalyst bed to partition the bed into a first top bed and a second virtual bed. The bypass device allows any fluid feedstock to bypass the first top bed of the fixed catalyst bed as it fouls and enter the second virtual bed under conditions that promote depositing any foulants contained in the bypass flow on the top surface of the second virtual bed rather than in the interstices of the second virtual bed. The invention also relates to an improved fixed bed reactor comprising the inventive bypass device and a method for extending the operating life of a fixed bed reactor that employs the inventive bypass device.

Abstract:

An apparatus removes CO from a hydrogen-rich gas stream in a hydrogen fuel cell system. CO fouls costly catalytic particles in the membrane electrode assemblies. Both a catalyst adapted to perform a water gas shift reaction, and a carbon dioxide adsorbent are disposed in a rotating pressure swing adsorber housing. The adsorption of carbon dioxide shifts equilibrium toward carbon monoxide consumption. A second adsorbent may be disposed in the housing for adsorbing carbon monoxide at low temperatures, and is adapted to desorb carbon monoxide at high temperatures. The present invention advantageously eliminates a unit operation from a space-constrained fuel cell vehicle by combining the WGS catalyst and a CO adsorbent in a single reactor/housing. The apparatus further eliminates the use of a PROX reactor, by providing an apparatus which incorporates CO adsorption and consequent carbon monoxide consumption in the place of the PROX reactor.
