Methods and novel intermediates of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R. sub. 6 and R. sub. 7 are lower alkyl or benzyl or R. sub. 6 and R. sub. 7 taken together are --CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 --, --CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 -- or --CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 CH. sub. 2 --, R. sub. 8 is C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 21 alkyl or a C. sub. 2 -C. sub. 21 monounsaturated alkenyl, which may optionally be substituted with substitution substituents independently selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 6 alkyl, C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 6 alkoxy, C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 6 alkoxy C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 6 alkyl, C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 6 alkanoyl, amino, halo, cyano, azido, oxo, mercapto and nitro, and R. sub. 9 is an alcohol protecting group.
