  • World Wide Web Internet Delay Monitor

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6411998, Jun 25, 2002
  • Filed:
    Sep 8, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    08/924987
  • Inventors:
Raymond Morris Bryant - Austin TX
Richard Dale Hoffman - Austin TX
Samuel Kahn - Mountain View CA
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 15173
  • US Classification:
    709224, 370216
  • Abstract:
A method of determining Internet delays associated with requests from a Web client connectable to a Web server. The method begins at the Web server in response to a first HTTP request. In particular, the Web server serves a response to the first HTTP request and logs a server processing time associated with serving that response. After the response is delivered back to the Web client that initiated the request, an end user response time associated with the first HTTP request is calculated at the Web client. Upon a new HTTP request (typically the next one), the end user response time associated with the first HTTP request is then passed from the Web client to the Web server in a cookie. The Internet delay associated with the first HTTP request is then calculated by subtracting the server processing time from the end user response time.

William Robert Reynolds - Austin TX
Robert J. Urquhart - Austin TX
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 1200
  • US Classification:
    707206, 707101, 707103, 717148, 717154
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus for instrumenting garbage collection in a data processing system is provided. During garbage collection, a pass is made through the object heap and a plurality of heap data is retrieved and written to a trace file. The data may include the type of object, the size of the object on the heap, the class of the object, if appropriate, and a plurality of pointers, including live set pointers, and one or more tags representing attributes that may be associated with the particular object. The instrumentation may controlled to occur at a preselected phase of the garbage collection process. Additionally, a user may dynamically initiate a garbage collection instrumentation if the user determines that an event has occurred during the operation of the data processing system about which the user wishes further data.

  • Abstract:
A method of substrate design of a multilayer ceramic module that uses menu die of the same size. One of these menu die provides a âgenericâ substrate design having internal wiring with the greatest number of input/output (I/O) signal leads of all the dies available. Middle (redistribution) layers include electrical interconnections for both power and the I/O signal lead wires between the die interface terminals and a bottom surface metallurgy (BSM) layer that has electrical connector pads by use of a customization layer.
  • Method And System For Low Overhead Spin Lock Instrumentation

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6622189, Sep 16, 2003
  • Filed:
    Nov 30, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/726274
  • Inventors:
Raymond Morris Bryant - Austin TX
William Henry Hartner - Austin TX
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 946
  • US Classification:
    710200, 709104
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus is presented for controlling spin lock instrumentation for a spin lock in a system with a cache. A lock flag represents a busy state for the spin lock; a first instrumentation flag is a global variable representing an enablement state for the spin lock instrumentation. A second instrumentation flag, stored within the same cache line as the lock flag, is also maintained as an updateable indication of the first instrumentation flag. Prior to each acquirement of the spin lock, the second instrumentation flag is checked for an indication that spin lock instrumentation is enabled. Although a reading of the lock flag may generate a cache miss, the lock flag is necessarily checked upon attempting to acquire the lock; the check of the second instrumentation flag cannot generate a superfluous cache miss because the second instrumentation flag is in the same cache line as the lock flag.
  • Method And System For Zero Overhead Software Performance Measurement Instrumentation

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6658471, Dec 2, 2003
  • Filed:
    Jun 29, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/607172
  • Inventors:
Robert Francis Berry - Austin TX
Raymond Morris Bryant - Austin TX
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 15173
  • US Classification:
    709224, 709226, 717140, 717150
  • Abstract:
A method, system, and computer program product is presented for minimizing overhead that may be incurred by executing specialized code, such as debug code or instrumentation code for monitoring the performance of the application, that is present within an application. The application executes on a data processing system having a processor containing predicate registers. The application is compiled in a manner in which the processor instructions for the specialized code are predicated using a set of one or more predicate registers that are dedicated or reserved by software convention for predicating the specialized code. In other words, for a given application, compilers and other sources of machine instructions do not generate any predicated processor instructions, other than processor instructions for the specialized code, which use the reserved predicate registers. When the application executes, neither the operating system nor other applications use the reserved predicate registers. An operating system function can be called or invoked to set the values of the reserved predicate registers so that the specialized code either does or does not execute in a chosen manner.

  • Method And System For Periodic Trace Sampling Using A Mask To Qualify Trace Data

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6728949, Apr 27, 2004
  • Filed:
    Dec 14, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/460845
  • Inventors:
Raymond Morris Bryant - Austin TX
Frank Eliot Levine - Austin TX
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 944
  • US Classification:
    717127, 717128, 717124, 717126, 717129, 717130, 717131, 714 38, 714 49, 714 45, 712233, 712234, 712236
  • Abstract:
A method and system for monitoring execution performance of a program is provided. Profiling functionality may be qualified by setting various qualifying flags at the request of a user. These qualifying flags may be used to limit the amount of trace data being generated or processed, thereby providing a more focused picture of an applications execution to the user. One or more trace, qualifying conditions are selectable by a user and are used during a profiling phase of application execution or during a post-processing phase of analyzing the application execution. During a profiling phase, an occurrence of a selected event or a timer interrupt is detected, and a determination is made as to whether a trace qualifying condition has been previously selected. In response to a determination that a trace qualifying condition has been selected, a trace record is then generated. During a post-processing phase, a trace record is read that contains a trace condition mask that stores the trace qualifying conditions that were active when the trace record was generated.

    60789565, Jun 20, 2000
  • Filed:
    Sep 8, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/924986
  • Inventors:
Raymond Morris Bryant - Austin TX
Richard Dale Hoffman - Austin TX
Samuel Kahn - Mountain View CA

    G06F 1730
  • US Classification:
    709224
  • Abstract:
A method of logging information in a computer network having a Web client connectable to a Web server. In response to the HTTP request (and as a result of receiving a response to that request), a response time associated with that first HTTP request is calculated. Thereafter, the response time calculated is passed from the Web client on a subsequent HTTP request to that Web server, where the information is logged for later use.
