Abstract:
A cryoprobe system utilizing a monolithic, insulated, hand-held thermal mass having an exposed tip for cryosurgical applications and the like, as well as a heat extraction base configured to interface with the thermal mass to quickly and efficiently reduce the heat of the thermal mass to cryogenic temperatures. The heat extraction base of the preferred embodiment of the present invention is configured to interface with the tip of the thermal mass, such that the tip plugs in securely to the base, to permit an efficient thermal transfer of heat from the thermal mass through the base via a heat exchange system communicating with the base which employs a low temperature cryo-refrigeration unit. The cryo-refrigeration unit may comprise a single low temperature cooling unit to reduce the temperature of the base to around minus one hundred degrees Centigrade utilizing off-the-shelf cryogenic refrigeration methods, or may utilize a series of more conventional refrigeration units in a primary and secondary heat extraction arrangement, which method may further utilize thermocouple or Peltier effect device assist to further reduce the temperature of the heat extraction base to the required temperature. Also claimed is the method of cryosurgery employing the device(s) of the present invention.

Abstract:
A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) utilizing MHD principles, wherein an aortic electrode assembly is located within a main femoral artery in the aorta, in the vicinity of the heart of a patient, which electrode assembly is exposed to a high density magnetic field generated outside of the patient. The high density magnetic field urges electrified blood within the artery in the vicinity of the electrode along the length of the electrode in a uniform direction, thereby providing a fluid pumping force and pressure commensurate with the magnetic field strength and electrode current in accordance with MHD theory and practice. A cardio bypass system is also taught, wherein in addition to the aortic electrode assembly, as second electrode assembly is placed in the inferior vena cava having an opposite electrode polarity to the aortic electrode assembly, such that the second electrode assembly directs blood flow toward the heart. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the magnetic field is generated exterior of the patient via a superconducting magnet which is designed to bridge the torso of the patent, such that the electrodes are generally centrally disposed within the magnetic field, along a longitudinal axis aligned with the aorta (and inferior vena cava), and generally orthogonal to the magnetic field. Sensors monitoring the patient may utilize ECG, blood pressure, and other data to control the magnet, varying the magnetic field so as to emulate the pumping action and intensity of the patents heart in real time, or simulate same.

Abstract:
A thermal applicator for medical use which is worn upon or applied directly to the body of a patient to modify its temperature for therapeutic treatment. The preferred embodiment of the present invention contemplates the utilization of a heat pipe having first and second ends and a length, the first and second ends communicating with first and second thermally conductive plates, respectively, the first thermally conductive plate configured to communicate with an exterior portion of the body of the patient and to provide localized thermal treatment, the second thermally conductive plate placed at an area removed from the area to be treated, and configured to accept, for example, an ice pack (or other thermal material or apparatus) to affect a change in the temperature of the second thermally conductive plate, cooling the second end of the heat pipe and allowing the heat pipe to cool the first thermally conductive plate, thereby providing localized cooling of the area to which it is applied. An alternative embodiment of the invention contemplates a heat source in lieu of the ice pack, wherein the second thermally conductive plate would function as an evaporator, thereby providing a reverse cycle in the heat pipe, for heating the area to be treated via the first thermally conductive plate. The present invention may be utilized for localized thermal application on various parts of the body, and several examples are illustrated, including an exemplary system to treat plantar fasciitis.
