    An electronic fiberoptic power measuring instrument which utilizes a plurality of different detectors to ascertain the power of a light beam. The light beam that enters the instrument can be selectively altered to be directly transmitted to a primary detector or can be reflected to be transmitted to a secondary detector. The structure for altering the light beam takes the form of a movable member which is arranged to intersect the path of the light beam. The movable member can be moved to a plurality of different positions with a different meter function being obtained at each position.

  • Abstract:
    An optical fault finder employing a novel processing technique to achieve greater sensitivity to loss detection and location of faults. The technique includes the use of a matched filter which sequentially operates on a set of datapoints in the trace signal. The resulting matched filter function generates peaks at those locations corresponding to discrete losses in the trace signal. In order to optimize response of the matched filter with respect to reflective faults, a clipping filter is applied to the trace signal, prior to the matched filter, to remove reflective signals. Means are also provided for determining the value of the loss, and for optimizing the pulse width of the test signal launched into the fiber under test.

  • Abstract:
    An optical fault finder which optimizes the pulse width of the test signal which is transmitted through an optical fiber. The fault finder is an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) having a variable pulse width light source and associated timer. When a first test signal is launched down the optical fiber, a microprocessor within the OTDR detects any discrete losses and records the signal level at these faults. The OTDR then launches subsequent test signals whose pulse widths have been optimized according to the signal level at each fault. Also, a novel processing technique utilizes a matched filter to provide greater sensitivity to loss detection and location of the corresponding faults.
