Abstract:

A method of thermal compression bonding conductors of a multiconductor flat cable or electrical component by melting through a base layer from the reverse side of a base layer supporting the conductors. The multiconductor flat cable or electrical component comprises a base layer with conductors disposed thereon and a flat cover having an opening provided therein at a bonding site, preferably by die cutting. The flat cover with the opening is laminated to the base layer, overlaying the conductors, so that the conductors are mechanically stabilized by the base layer while being exposed through the bonding opening. The shape of the multiconductor flat cable or electrical component of the present invention may be highly varied. In one embodiment, the flat multiconductor electrical component circumferentially extends around a central area, for example, totally encompassing in IC chip which may be connected to the conductors thereof at a bonding site. The conductors fan out from the IC chip to connections at the outer perimeter, and the top cover is eliminated completely.

Abstract:

An oral appliance includes a frame for mounting to a user's teeth and a tongue contacting retaining member extending from the frame and configured in use to limit movement of the tongue toward the user's throat when the user is exercising or sleeping to maintain an open air passageway. The retaining member is positioned relative to the frame such that in use the retaining member contacts the tongue in a zone behind the second molars and in front of the pharyngeal reflex region of the tongue. The retaining member is further configured to lightly contact the tongue, and to apply a restraining force to the tongue as the tongue begins to move toward the user's throat during exercise or as the user falls asleep.

Abstract:

A device includes a speech input device. A speech recognition processor connected to the speech input device receives speech input. The device includes a computer readable medium coupled to the speech recognition processor. A command table stored on the computer readable medium includes commands corresponding to a control on a manual input interface on a digital music player. The digital music player is separate from the speech input device. The speech recognition processor compares the speech input to the commands in the command table and generates instructions if the speech input matches a command in the command table. A programmable controller is coupled to the speech recognition processor and is configured to receive instructions and to convert the instructions into control signals. The device includes a standard interface connector coupled to the programmable controller. The programmable controller sends the control signals through the standard interface connector.

Abstract:

A surgical instrument includes a housing, an elongated shaft extending distally from the housing, and an end effector extending distally from the elongated shaft. A tensile member extends through the elongated shaft to operatively couple to the end effector to a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism includes an actuator operable to induce longitudinal motion in the tensile member, and longitudinal motion in the tensile member induces movement of the end effector. A tensioning mechanism is provided to impart a proximally directed force on the drive mechanism such that the proximally directed force is transmitted to the tensile member. Thus, the tensile member may be maintained in a tensile state over time.

An internally augmented, parallel rail electromagnetic projectile launching system includes a plurality of projectile launching rail pairs wherein the stacked height of the rails adjacent to the launcher bore decreases from the breech end to the muzzle end of the launcher. The launcher rail pairs may be electrically connected in series with each other and in series with an external current source. Alternatively, a separate though not necessarily entirely independent current source may be provided for each pair of rails and switching means may be included to substantially simultaneously connect each current source to its associated rail pair.

An electromagnetic projectile launcher is provided with a pair of parallel conductive projectile launching rails which are generally T-shaped with a significant current carrying cross section located symmetrically around a horizontal bore center line. Augmenting conductors which may be either series or parallel connected are located adjacent to the projectile launching rails. In favorable embodiments, force augmentation is also achieved by a reduction in launcher rail height from the breech to the muzzle end.

A bonding opening exposing conductors through a cover of a multiconductor flat cable or electrical component to allow direct bonding thereof is described. The multiconductor flat cable or electrical component having a base layer with conductors disposed thereon and a flat cover having an opening provided therein at a bonding site, preferably by die cutting. The conductors fan out from the IC chip to connections at the outer perimeter, and the top cover is eliminated completely.
