Control Loop Performance Using A Variable Speed Drive As The Final Control Element
An AC electronic variable speed drive unit is used to power an AC induction motor that drives a centrifugal pump at controlled speeds for controlling the flow of a fluid process. The feedback loop controller function is implemented in the variable speed drive electronics, another network device, or may be located in a separate controller. This drive/motor/pump unit is used instead of a more conventional process control valve, with its attending actuator and positioning device, in order to improve the responsiveness, stability, and accuracy of the control loop. Coincidently, it also reduces the energy required for the process by the elimination of pressure drop across the control valve and allows a lower cost, smaller electric motor and pump to be used. Elimination of the control valve eliminates a source of fugitive emission through the valve packing, and reduces maintenance requirements that are necessary for a control valve. An AC electronic variable speed drive unit is used to power an AC induction motor that drives a fan at controlled speeds for controlling the airflow to a boiler or HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system. The feedback loop airflow controller function is implemented in the variable speed drive electronics, another device on the network, or may be located in a separate controller. This drive/motor/fan unit is used instead of a more conventional damper with its attending actuator and a positioning device in order to improve the responsiveness, stability, and accuracy of the control loop. Coincidently, it also reduces the energy required for the air handling system by the elimination of pressure drop across the damper, and allows a smaller fan and electric motor to be used. Elimination of the variable positioning air damper eliminates a source of noise, valuable in HVAC applications, and eliminates maintenance requirements for this mechanical device.

Abstract:
During recording of a television signal on a VCR, data are accumulated with respect to the time of occurrence and duration of detectable events, such as blank frames, in the television signal, and such data are stored. Timing reference data are written onto the tape as it is recorded. At a time subsequent to the recording process, the stored data are analyzed to classify the content of the television signal between the detectable events and a playback map is constructed for the recorded signal. During playback, the stored playback map is retrieved and stored timing data are compared to the timing reference data read from the tape. The VCR is automatically commanded into a fast scan mode when the tape reaches the beginning time of a portion of the video signal that has been classified for elimination during playback. The VCR is then automatically commanded to return to the normal "play" mode when the tape reaches the ending time of that portion of the video signal. Since all of the television signal is recorded on the tape, any or all of the signal may be viewed, even if portions of it have been misclassified.
Method And Apparatus For Inserting Digital Data In A Blanking Interval Of An Rf Modulated Video Signal

US Classification:

Abstract:
A time code or other digital code is inserted into a video signal by modulating the video signal itself or the signal's radio frequency (RF) carrier. This allows the code to be recorded concurrently with recording of the video signal, thereby obviating the need for a specially adapted recording apparatus. Furthermore, since the code is embedded in the recorded video signal, the encoded information may be retrieved from the video signal in a unit that is external to the playback apparatus. In combination with a conventional video cassette recorder (VCR), the video signal that is tuned to by the VCR is processed to extract raster synchronization signals. A modulator inserted ahead of the RF input to the VCR modulates the RF carrier in response to the digital code. Feedback of the tuned video signal insures proper synchronization of the broadband RF modulation so that the digital code is inserted into a non-viewable portion of the recorded video signal.
Method And Apparatus For Excision Endpoint Control

US Classification:

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for determining the depth of excision generated by a material removal process, for determining the thickness of unablated material below the excision or incision, and for providing endpoint control of a material removal process utilize acoustic transducers for measuring the time delay between a first acoustic pulse resulting from material removal and a second acoustic pulse reflected from a distal surface or boundary layer of the material. The time delay between the two pulses detected by the transducer provides a measure of excision depth and of the depth of material below the excision. Endpoint control is provided by terminating material removal when a selected excision depth is detected. The invention can be used, for example, as a real-time monitor of excision depth and residual lamella thickness under the excision during laser corneal surgery.
High Energy Laser-To-Waveguide Coupling Devices And Methods

Summit Technology, Inc. - Watertown MA
International Classification:
G02B 632
US Classification:
350 9618
Abstract:
Laser-to-waveguide coupling devices and methods are disclosed employing an aperture, and an imaging lens. The aperture clips the beam edges to flatten the spatial intensity profile, and the lens mirror-images the plane of the aperture onto the waveguide face with appropriate magnification or demagnification to match the input beam dimensions to those of the waveguide. In one preferred embodiment, a first focusing lens is also employed in conjunction with a pinhole aperture and a second imaging lens. The first focusing lens focuses the laser beam onto the aperture and thereby reduces the optical path length. The second imaging lens images the plane of the aperture onto the waveguide.

Abstract:
A distributed control system (DCS) for controlling an industrial process using a plurality of distributed control nodes (DCNs) can include a plurality of Device DCNs, each Device DCN including an I/O interface coupled with a field device for single channel input or output, a plurality of Application DCNs, and one or more Ethernet switches. The plurality of Device DCNs and the plurality of Application DCNs can be adapted to host a software runtime and communicatively coupled via the one or more Ethernet switches. The DCS architecture can include of two types of DCNs; Application DCNs and Device DCNs. The software runtime can be configured to selectively provide control application level communication and function block execution services.
