A flow meter for use in a flow stream with a tubular housing, including a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, in the flow stream, with the inlet pressure exceeding the outlet pressure. The interior has an orifice defined in a crystalline silicon membrane, along crystal planes of the silicon so that the geometry of the orifices is precisely known and has a sharp knife edge rim profile. Where the fluid is a gas, pressure and temperature transducers measure conditions inside of the housing for application of gas law principles. By using instantaneous pressure and temperature in the chamber, mass flow through the outlet orifices of the chamber is computed and delivered as an output signal.

Abstract:
The preferred embodiments described herein provide a medical diagnostic ultrasound imaging system with a rotatable user interface element having a non-rotatable indicator. In one preferred embodiment, a medical diagnostic ultrasound imaging system user interface is provided with a user interface element comprising a rotatable portion disposed around a non-rotatable portion that comprises an indicator identifying a function of the user interface element. With this preferred embodiment, the indicator does not rotate with rotation of the rotatable portion. In another preferred embodiment, a medical diagnostic ultrasound imaging system is provided with a user interface comprising a rotary input device comprising a rotatable shaft, an inner member disposed around and fixed with respect to the rotatable shaft, and an outer member disposed around the inner member and coupled with the rotatable shaft. The inner member comprises an indicator identifying a function of the rotary input device, and rotation of the outer member rotates the rotatable shaft of the rotary input device without rotating the inner member.

Constant Offset Buffer For Reducing Sampling Time In A Semiconductor Temperature Sensor

National Semiconductor Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:

US Classification:
374178, 374170, 326 82, 327512
Abstract:
A data acquisition system for sampling a temperature signal from a temperature sensor includes: a programmable current source, a buffer with a constant offset, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The programmable current source selectively provides bias currents to the temperature sensor, which produces response voltages in response to the applied bias current. The buffer receives the response voltages and produces buffered response voltages that include a constant offset. The ADC is arranged to produce digital codes in response to the buffered response voltages. The digital codes are used to determine a temperature associated with the temperature sensor. The buffer isolates the temperature sensor from the ADC such that loading effects are minimized and set-up times for the conversion are minimized.

Abstract:
A circuit is arranged control the acceleration of a fan by limiting the rate of change in fan speed control signals. The control system includes an acceleration controller that low pass filters a target fan speed control signal. The low pass filtering signal minimizes abrupt changes in the fan speed. A sudden change in the speed of the fan often results in an audible noise that is undesirably distracting. Filtering the fan speed control signal advantageously slows the rate of the fan speed changes without having to change device drivers for controlling the fan.

Nobel prize in chemistry awarded for method to visualise biomolecules
Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson will receive equal shares of the 9m Swedish kronor (825,000) prize, which was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on Wednesday.Electron microscopes were long believed to only be suitable for imaging dead matter, because the powerful electron beam destroys biological material. But in 1990, Richard Henderson succeeded in using an electron microscope to generate a three-dimensional image of a protein at atomic resolution. This
