Abstract:

A method for restoring functional ambulation in subjects with incomplete spinal cord injuries which includes partial weight bearing therapy followed by epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) to facilitate partial weight bearing therapy and over-ground walking. Electrical epidural stimulation (EES) is generated by an implanted device during partial weight bearing therapy on a treadmill. The subject is then transitioned to full weight bearing gait training on a treadmill with EES to over-ground gait training with EES and a walker, and finally to full weight bearing independent stepping over-ground with EES with or without an assistive device.

Abstract:

A wound treatment administers a vasodilator by: (a) active transdermal treatment such as: by direct perfusion of the wound with the vasodilator, by an intradermal injection of the vasodilator about the wound and its surrounding skin area, by iontophoresis about the wound and its surrounding skin area with the vasodilator, by microdialysis of the wound with the vasodilator using one or more probe situated about the wound and its surrounding skin area; and/or by (b) passive transdermal treatment such as: by transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) about the wound and its surrounding skin area while administering the vasodilator, or by a combination of the foregoing. The vasodilator can be calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) with or without vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), nitric oxide (NO), nerve growth factor (NGF), or a combinations of the forgoing. Blood flow proximal the wound can be monitored during the treatment to derive a chemical/dose relationship of the vasodilator being administered in the treatment.

Abstract:

A method of treating ischemic skin pressure ulcers and helping such ulcers heal has the steps of a. debriding the ulcer as necessary to produce a clean, largely uncontaminated surface; and b. applying calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) intradermally or transdermally to the periphery of the ulcer, the CGRP being administered at a dose below a vascular-affecting threshold, thereby enhancing ulcer healing with the anti-ischemic and tissue-healing properties of the CGRP. Also provided is a method of preventing, pressure ulcers of the skin in individuals prone thereto with the steps of a. providing a container with contents comprising CGRP and a vehicle, the CGRP container further comprising connectors for connection to an iontophoresis controller; b. connecting the CGRP container to the iontophoresis controller; c. applying the CGRP container to a body location known to be prone to pressure ulcers; and d. performing an electronic program for forcing CGRP through the skin.

Abstract:

A small, transportable, and rollable device for lifting and supporting patients undergoing partial weight bearing gait training (over treadmill or over ground) is provided. The carriage underlying this device is "U"-shaped with a pair of low horizontal rails making up the arms of the "U" and the lifting equipment being mounted at the closed end of the "U". Low profile for movement through doors and in low-ceiling rooms is achieved by a vertically telescoping height adjustment to the top of which is connected a horizontal "Y"-shaped connection to provide two connection points at the ends of the "Y" (and above and between the rails) for a patient harness. The harness construction provides sufficient adjustability for a therapist to achieve equal division of support among groin, abdominal, and chest areas, while permitting full leg extension of the patient. The low rails enable unobstructed access to the patient's legs during gait training.
