There have now been well over 100 different studies on the effect of negative political campaigns on voters. The political scientist Richard Lau and his colleagues analyzed all of these studies and concluded that negative campaigns fail to achieve their desired goal.
Political scientists Richard Lau, David Anderson and David Redlawsk have argued that while we tend to focus on voter turnout as an important aspect of democratic citizenship, we should also pay attention to whether citizens are voting correctly.
"When is it that anybody performs so badly that you'd just say, Oh, my God, I would never vote for this person'?" said Rutgers University professor Richard Lau, who studies how voters decide. "Someone would have to seem so incompetent. That's not going to happen."
