A gas turbine engine having variable geometry flow controllers therein for controlling mass flow in accordance with engine operation includes a rotor with a wide variation in thrust forces thereon during different phases of engine operation countered by a variable axial load integrating device having a rotating hydraulic thrust compensating piston mounted forwardly of the rotor in association with a rotor thrust bearing and further including means for generating a centrifugal head in accordance with engine speed and wherein improved oil distribution panels are included to evenly distribute oil between the rotating piston and a nonrotating counterpiston to form a uniform depth of rotating oil automatically regulated by an integral, flow regulator having flow area therethrough varied in accordance with axial position of a thrust bearing carriage that has the variable rotor thrust loading imposed thereon.
A shield for disposition between a lubricated bearing and a labyrinth seal in a gas turbine engine having a rotating member rotatable about a vertical axis, the shield preventing lubricant contamination of the seal. The shield includes an inner helical baffle on the rotating member between the bearing and the seal and an outer helical baffle on a stationary support between the inner baffle and the seal. The inner and outer baffles radially overlap to foreclose lubricant drip onto the seal and have corresponding helical leads so that the inner baffle can be threaded through the outer baffle when the rotating member is installed on the support.
A labyrinth seal of abradable design between a shaft and a partition separating regions of high and relatively lower gas pressure. The seal is located in close proximity to a gas permeable bearing also disposed between the shaft and the partition and located in the relatively lower pressure region. The seal permits limited leakage gas flow toward and through the bearing and pieces of seal material abraded during shaft rotation tend to entrain in the leakage gas flow. A baffle is disposed on the shaft between the seal and the bearing and defines a portion of a serpentine path for the leakage gas flow. A contamination trap containing a self-supporting adhesive material is formed on the baffle perpendicular to a portion of the serpentine path so that while the leakage gas turns 90. degree. at the trap, the heavier particles of abraded material impact on and are captured by the adhesive material.
