Abstract:

Micro-suspension polymerization is a technique that it is widely used on a commercial basis for the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer into polyvinyl chloride. This invention reveals a greatly improved redox initiator system for use in such polymerizations. The redox initiator systems of this invention are comprised of (a) a free radical generator, such as a peroxide, and (b) a reducing agent selected from the group consisting of ascorbic acid, isoascorbic acid, and certain derivatives of ascorbic acid. The initiator systems of this invention do not require the utilization of water-soluble metal salts. However, water-soluble metal salts can be utilized in such initiator systems in catalytic amounts wherein the ratio of the water-soluble metal salt to the free radical generator is less than 0. 09.

Abstract:

A letoff truck having wheels for rolling the truck to and from a bias cutter feeder is releasably connected to the feeder for movement of the truck with the feeder during angular adjustment of the feeder for a desired bias angle setting. The truck is also mounted for transverse movement relative to the feeder to compensate for deviations in the position of the edge of the goods conveyed from the letoff truck to the feeder. Adjustment of the feeder angle about a pivot axis to provide the desired bias angle setting is provided by a powered sprocket mounted on the feeder and positioned between idler sprockets. The sprockets are engageable with a chain member extending between the ends of a transverse track on which one end of the feeder is supported by rollers. When the desired feeder position is obtained the feeder may be positively locked in that position.

Abstract:

Ply stock is delivered to a bias-cutter by a feed mechanism which moves the stock to be bias cut in measured increments of length. The present apparatus provides a smooth continuous surface of a feed pan supporting the full width of the ply stock to a forward edge which is adjustable angularly to the angle of the desired bias cut. The feed pan moves toward the shear line of the bias-cutter with the ply stock held on the surface; then with holding clamps released is drawn away from the shear line while the ply stock is held to the shear line. The feed pan is less subject to distortion or deflection and is relatively insensitive to changes in humidity. Accuracy of both bias angle cut and length of cut are improved.

A method of achieving chain transfer in the polymerization of a vinyl chloride monomer to polyvinyl chloride, utilizing aldehydes of 3 to 6 carbon atoms as the chain transfer agent and treating the polymerization mixture with an alkali bisulfite, such as sodium bisulfite or potassium bisulfite solution after the vinyl chloride monomer has been stripped from the polymerization mixture to obtain modified polyvinyl chloride having improved compounded physical properties.

Abstract:

There is disclosed, in a microsuspension polymerization process for producing homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride, having a dispersion step and a seed polymerization step, the improvement wherein butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is added to the dispersion step and, wherein, when necessary to control temperature, additional BHA is added to the seed polymerization step. There is also disclosed a homopolymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride produced by the improved process.
