Abstract:
A method for acoustically investigating characteristics of formations penetrated by a borehole such as fractures by taking differential Stoneley wave acoustic energy measurements between pairs of receivers of an array of receivers carried by a logging tool. The receivers of each pair all have the same spacing. The energy is that detected by the receivers in response to acoustic pulses generated by a transmitter spaced from the receivers on the tool. The differential energy measurements are stacked to obtain a stacked differential energy log.

Abstract:
A system and method is disclosed for generating an oriented three-dimensional graphical representation of a borehole. A system is implemented for receiving oriented caliper and borehole trajectory data taken by a 4-arm (or more) caliper device relating to a borehole. This information is used to generate an oriented three-dimensional wire mesh model of the borehole and color map the generated three-dimensional wire mesh model using the caliper data and gamma ray (or other lithology indicator) to reflect one or both of the orientation of borehole ellipticity or the lithology of the borehole.
Method And Apparatus For Detecting And Evaluating Borehole Wall Fractures
A method and apparatus are described for generating a quick look display of an acoustic investigation of a borehole wherein a parameter of interest is derived from vertically spaced sonic receivers and displayed in a laterally continuous display log where the parameter values from respective receivers are recorded at preassigned positions. A fracture sensitive parameter is measured such as the energy in a low frequency Stoneley wave and when the parameter values are laterally recorded areas indicative of fractures become visually enhanced particularly with a laterally expanded display log. Techniques for the detection and evaluation of fractures are described.

Abstract:
A modular sonde may be configured in various ways for measurements in open or cased boreholes. The sonde is conveyed on an electric wireline with or without a coiled tubing for conveying hydraulic energy from the surface. Modules common to the configurations include telemetry electronics, orientation, hydraulic energy accumulator, fluid chambers, hydraulic power, pumpout, and flow control. Each configuration has a stress/rheology module suited to the borehole situation. An open-hole sonde configuration has a stress/rheology module with an instrumented, inflatable packer module, an orienting module, and a probe module. A second open-hole sonde configuration has a stress/rheology module with an instrumented straddle-packer assembly. A cased-hole sonde configuration has a gunblock assembly, a gunblock orienting module hydraulics for formation pretest and hydraulics for stressing the formation to obtain data related to formation stress characteristics. A second cased-hole sonde configuration has a straddle-packer assembly, a casing perforation device in the straddle interval, and hydraulics for stressing the formation to obtain data related to formation stress characteristics.
