Abstract:

Apparatus and associated methods for actuating variable stiffness material (VSM) structures and achieving deformation of the structures. The apparatus and the associated methods use internal embedded actuation elements and/or externally attached elements to the VSM structures to achieve the desired deformation. In particular, the actuation can be changed due to the variable stiffness nature of the materials. That is, the invention provides the ability to control the deformation of structures using local stiffness control over subregions of the component in addition to or in substitution for actuation. Furthermore, the invention exploits the variable stiffness properties of the VSM structures to enable new functionalities impossible to realize with conventional constant stiffness materials.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a method for optimizing the design of a shape morphing structure using a genetic algorithm. The method includes defining design parameters of a surface having variable properties into a chromosome. The variable properties of the chromosome are the actual properties of the chromosome. The chromosome has a total of Nmax genes, where each gene corresponds to a variable property element in the surface. Additionally, each gene has n design parameters, wherein the design parameters are incremental changes to the actual properties of the chromosome. A genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the genes until a fitness level for at least one chromosome has been exceeded. When the fitness value for any chromosome in the population is above a predetermined threshold, then the design process is terminated and the final design solution[s] are the design parameters of the chromosome[s] that exceed the predetermined threshold value.

Abstract:

Disclosed is a cochlear stimulation system and associated methods that utilizes a magnetic field sensor to determine the status of magnetically-coupled components. The cochlear stimulation system includes an implantable portion positionable beneath the skin of a patient and an external portion positionable outside the skin of the patient. The implantable portion includes a multi-electrode array having a plurality of electrodes configured to be placed in cochlear duct of a patient and an internal magnet. The external portion includes a speech processor configured to generate control signals in response to received sound signals and an external magnet. The external magnet and the internal magnet generate an attractive magnetic force that maintains the external portion in position relative to the internal portion against the scalp of the patient. The cochlear stimulation system further includes a magnetic field sensor configured to sense the value of a magnetic field generated by the external magnet and the internal magnet in order to monitor changes in the magnetic field.

Abstract:

An apparatus includes a substrate having a recess and a first insulator submerged in the recess of the substrate. The apparatus also includes a cover having a second insulator that, together with the first insulator, defines an insulated volume. The apparatus further includes one or more components to be cooled located over the first insulator and within the insulated volume. The apparatus could also include one or more electrical conductors located over the first insulator, where at least one of the one or more components is electrically connected to the one or more electrical conductors. The one or more electrical conductors could be submerged in the recess of the substrate. The one or more electrical conductors could be thermally-insulative at cryogenic temperatures and could include carbon nanotubes. The first and second insulators could include foam or aerogel insulation.
