Abstract:

A hydraulic latching spool valve has at movable piston and valve cage defining two seats. In the valve cage, a moveable piston is operable to move the valve into open and closed positions. A spring positioned in a pilot close chamber urges the piston to close. A pulse of fluid pressure at a pilot open chamber causes the piston to open. A latching chamber is formed on the interior of the piston, the latching chamber being exposed to supply pressure when the piston is in the open position. Accordingly, in the open position, supply fluid in the latching chamber generates sufficient latching force to overcome opposing forces generated by the sprig. The supply pressure holds the piston in the open position until a pulse of fluid pressure is applied to the pilot close chamber, thereby causing the valve to close.

Abstract:

A spool valve may be used in a subsea system with a single upstream pilot valve to control the spool valve. The spool valve opens and closes a main valve in response to fluid signals from the pilot valve. The main valve is connected to a source of pressurized supply fluid, which is selectively directed to a downstream apparatus. The spool valve and the main valve can be produced in an integrated design with a single body. In an alternative embodiment, the spool valve and main valve are separate with separate bodies. The spool valve may also be used in non-subsea systems.

Abstract:

The precision regulator connects to a high pressure fluid source and regulates the pressure to a downstream apparatus. If an overpressure occurs, it can be vented to atmosphere. An elongate control stem engages a supply seal assembly and a vent seal assembly and moves axially and past these seal assemblies to achieve regulation and venting. The set point of the regulator can be adjusted by rotation of an adjustment knob that adjusts the position of the elongate control stem relative to the supply seal assembly and the vent seal assembly. Regulation is achieved primarily by use of a sensor piston which transfers fluid pressure from a regulated port to the sensor piston which is opposed by a spring. Both the supply seal assembly and the vent seal assembly rely upon an o-ring and a seal ring to achieve a seal with the outside circumference of the control stem. The o-ring is compressed and distorted, thus exerting forces against the seal ring to achieve a better seal.

Abstract:

A relief valve having blow down values of 5% or lower is disclosed. The low blow down values are the result of reducing friction within the relief valve. The relief valve includes a movable plunger. Clearance is provided whereby the plunger does not experience significant friction as it moves into sealing contact with the seal assembly. An energized seal assembly forms a tight seal against the plunger while creating little friction, as the seal is elastomeric and the point of contact is minimized. The relief valve further includes an outlet port, which is adjustable 360Â about the relief valve.

A fluid injection system controls the distribution of fluid from a supply line to a selected well at an adjustable rate. A fluid barrier divides a cylinder into first and second chambers. A multi-position valve comprises a first position for passing fluid from the supply line into the first chamber to displace fluid from the second chamber back through the valve to an injection point, and a second position for passing fluid from the supply line to the second chamber to displace fluid from the first chamber back through the valve to the injection point. A control system in communication with a position sensor times displacement of the fluid barrier to selected positions, and selectively adjusts a variable valve opening to adjust flow rate, switch between the first and second positions, and periodically increase the valve opening for cleaning.

Abstract:

A dirty fluid valve for sealing high differential fluid pressures in a drilling environment and methods for using such a valve is disclosed. One embodiment of the valve includes a seal cartridge having several openings for directing a fluid path through the cartridge, a spring connected at one end of the seal cartridge and extending through the fluid path, and a seal member connected to the other end of the spring. The seal is actuatable between an open position and a closed position so that it covers one of the openings in the seal cartridge when it is in the closed position, thereby sealing off the fluid flow through the seal cartridge fluid path. The spring provides a pre-loading force to the seal member so that the seal member always has sufficient contact with the surfaces surrounding the opening that the seal covers.
