Abstract:

An improved guidewire for advancing a catheter within a body lumen which has a high strength proximal portion, a distal portion formed of superelastic alloy and a connector formed of superelastic alloy to provide torque transmitting coupling between the distal end of the proximal portion and the proximal end of the distal portion. The superelastic alloy elements are preferably cold worked and then heat treated at a temperature well above the austenite-to-martensite transformation temperature, while being subjected to longitudinal stresses equal to about 5 to about 50% of the room temperature yield stress to impart to the metal a straight âmemory. â The guiding member using such improved material exhibits a stress induced austenite-to-martensite phase transformation at an exceptionally high constant yield strength of at least 70 ksi for solid members and at least 50 ksi for tubular members with a broad recoverable strain of at least about 4% during the phase transformation.

Abstract:

This is an implantable medical device assembly for use in surgical procedures. It is most preferably an implantable structure having stenting properties but only partially coated with or partially associated with a material causing a localized angiogenic response. One variation of is an artificial occlusion kit having the inventive implantable stenting structure situatable and vaso-occlusive devices. The implantable stenting structure is typically situated so to prevent migration of artificial occlusion devices or implants from an occlusion site, such as an aneurysm, and into an adjacent body space, such as a blood vessel.

Abstract:

A device for accessing the spinal canal of a patient includes an introducer and a protective sleeve that is attached at one end thereof to a proximal end of the introducer. The protective sleeve has an outer stationary portion and an inner moveable portion. The outer and inner portions of the protective sleeve are separated by a crown region. A catheter is disposed inside the protective sleeve. During operation, the protective sleeve is advanced within the spinal canal to form a protective barrier between the catheter and the spinal cord. The catheter is advanced and retracted within the protective sleeve.

Abstract:

This is a device for bridging the neck of either an aneurysm in the vasculature and stabilizing the presence of vaso-occlusive devices (such as helically wound coils) in that aneurysm. The closure patch may be delivered either from the exterior of the distal end of a catheter or delivered from the catheter lumen. It is preferably implanted by the severance of an included electrolytically severable joint. The retainer assembly itself typically has a number of radially projecting elements which are, in turn, attached to a scrim-like fabric, preferably collagen-coated Dacron, extending among the various radially projecting elements. The closure patch is intended to be resident within the aneurysm after it is deployed. After deployment, the aneurysm may be at least partially filled with vaso-occlusive devices such as helically wound coils.

Abstract:

An intravascular catheter such as a dilatation catheter for angioplasty procedures having a removable distal shaft section. The catheter construction allows the original distal shaft section of the catheter to be removed and a replacement distal shaft section to be secured to the proximal section which is useful with angioplasty catheters when the dimensions of the balloon on the original distal shaft section are inappropriate for dilating a particular stenotic region. Such catheter construction is also useful when there is a need to implant a stent into a dilated stenotic region to maintain its patency.

Abstract:

An expandable intravascular medical device comprises an arcuate spring configured to be expanded into contact with the inner surface of a blood vessel. Another medical device comprises an electrode support structure, e. g. , a non-tubular arcuate structure or a cylindrical member, and a plurality of resilient spring loops laterally extending from the support structure. The contact created between the loops and a blood vessel is sufficient to anchor the medical device within the blood vessel. In another embodiment, the medical device comprises an elongated member and two resilient spring arms extending distally from the elongated member. The arms are configured to be laterally moved towards each other to place the medical device in a collapsed geometry, and configured to be laterally moved away from each into contact with an inner surface of a blood vessel to place the medical device an expanded geometry.

Abstract:

In one embodiment, a neck bridge for bridging the neck of an aneurysm includes a junction region, a number of radially extending array elements attached to the junction region, and a cover attached to one or both of the junction region and an array element. The array elements are configured to be positioned within the aneurysm after the neck bridge is deployed from a delivery device. In a second embodiment, the neck bridge includes a junction region and a braided or mesh-like structure secured to the junction region. The braided or mesh-like structure is made from an elastic material.
