Abstract:

Systems and methods are disclosed for utilizing personal digital assistants in a portable communications system. A personal digital assistant includes a global positioning system module, an L-band transceiver, and a processing system. The global positioning system module produces location information associated with the position of the personal digital assistant. The L-band transceiver broadcasts the location information to a network of at least one other personal digital assistant and receives location information from at least one other personal digital assistant within the network via a communications satellite. The processing system provides messages to the L-band transceiver and updates a display associated with the personal digital assistant according the received location information and the location information produced at the global positioning system module.

Abstract:

Systems and methods are disclosed for utilizing one or more tablet computer assemblies in a portable communications system. A tablet computer assembly includes a global positioning system module, an L-band transceiver, and a processing system. The global positioning system module that produces location information associated with the position of the tablet computer assembly. The L-band transceiver broadcasts the location information to at least one portable communication device through a relay network and receives location information from the at least one portable communications device via the relay network. The processing unit provides messages to the L-band transceiver and updates a display associated with the tablet computer assembly according the received location information and the location information produced at the global positioning system module.

Abstract:

Apparatus for aligning, supporting and stabilizing a drill string within a hole that is being drilled includes three elongated ski-like members which are disposed in circumferentially spaced positions about the drill string and in supporting engagement with the hole wall. Rotating bearing structures carried by the drill string are secured to the interior side of the ski-like members. The ski-like members are made in a number of longitudinal sections that are removably fastened together. According to the disclosed method, as the drill string is being extended and driven into the hole the ski-like members are assembled a section at a time and in such manner as not to interfere with the extension of the drill string.

In an underground mine, a machine for drilling upwardly is placed in one tunnel of the mine and is used to drill a vertical shaft communicating with another tunnel at a higher elevation. Abstract:

A cryogenic refrigerator is disclosed having a displacer with a regenerator therein. The regenerator opens at one end to a warm volume and at the other end to a cold volume. The opening at the cold volume includes an end hole and a plurality of radial holes. The radial holes serve as secondary passageways should the end hole become blocked with contaminants. The life of the cryogenic refrigerator is thereby greatly enchanced.

Abstract:

A motor winding assembly of mass M. sub. m is disposed for reciprocating linear movement within a housing, while a motor armature assembly of mass M. sub. a is disposed for reciprocating linear movement within the motor winding assembly. A first spring having a spring constant K. sub. m is connected between the motor winding assembly and the housing, and a second spring having a spring constant K. sub. a is connected between the motor armature assembly and the housing. The spring constants K. sub. m and K. sub. a satisfy the relation K. sub. m /K. sub. a =M. sub. m /M. sub. a, and since the motor housing assembly and the motor armature assembly move by amounts inversely proportional to their respective masses, essentially no vibration is transmitted to the housing over a wide range of motor operating frequencies.
