Abstract:

A method of inhibiting Ras function and therefore inhibiting the abnormal growth of cells is disclosed. The method comprises the administration of a compound of Formula 1. 0: to a biological system. In particular, the method inhibits the abnormal growth of cells in a mammal such as a human being. Novel compounds of the formulas 5. 0, 5. 1 and 5. 2, wherein R is âC(R )(R )(R ), and 5. 3, 5. 3A and 5. 3B, wherein R is âN(R )(R ), are disclosed. Also disclosed are processes for making 3-substituted compounds of Formulas 5. 0, 5. 1, 5. 2 and 5. 3. Further disclosed are novel compounds which are intermediates in the process for making 3-substituted compounds of Formulas 5. 0, 5. 1, 5. 2 and 5. 3.

Abstract:

A floating breakwater system comprises a plurality of modules that are flexibly affixed together. The modules are affixed together to make up a plurality of vertical panels made up of the modules and the vertical panels themselves are flexibly affixed together in generally parallel relationship. Each individual module has a front face that faces the oncoming wave. There are at least two inlets in the front surface and corresponding outlets in the rear surface and passageways between the inlets and the outlets such that the water propelled by the wave passes through the at least two passageways. Each passageway is tapered inwardly in the direction of the flow of the water and each passageway has a main longitudinal axis. The respective axes are angled inwardly toward each other and converge at a point displaced rearwardly from the outlets so that the water that passes through the passageways intersect at the point and the energy of the wave is dissipated.

Abstract:

A sectional shock-absorbing and motorist warning highway barrier is provided in the form of multi-component sections about four feet in length, and adapted to be joined together in end-to-end relation to form a continuous barrier, each section being made up of four vertically aligned horizontal components, providing a top component, and two mid-components of uniform thickness, and a flared bottom component, such components having offsets at opposed ends thereof for aligning successive sections with such offsets having transverse apertures for receiving bolts in securing together successive sections, abutting surfaces of the horizontal components having aligned offsets of semi-spherical contour to receive spherical plastic bumper members protrudingly and rotatably supported in the assembled section. The horizontal components are fashioned from concrete, suitably encased in plastic shells, and the spherical plastic bumper members may be either air filled, or filled with water or sand for added weight. The offsets for aligning successive sections are for direct section-to-section engagement, or for reception of vertically oriented, and suitably flexible interfitting connecting members.

Abstract:

A light weight, inexpensive rotary drum mixing device is provided in which an essentially pear shaped drum, open at the small end and having an axially elongated socket at the large end, is rotatably supported on a unitary base having a transversely extended forward end and an upwardly and angularly extending rear end providing a bearing portion detachably engageable with said socket to rotatably support the drum at an inclination of about 35. degree. , readily engageable means on the bearing portion and socket for preventing unintended axial movement, the forward end of the frame being slightly forward of the center of gravity of the rotatably supported drum to firmly support the same as drum contents are being mixed by rotation of the drum, and providing a pivot fulcrum for tilting the assemblage to discharge contents of the drum, and groove means adjacent the large end of the drum facilitating application of circumferential force to impart controlled rotation to the drum. The drum has a plurality of axially extending radial fins for lifting contents in rotation thereof and is preferably fashioned from molded plastic material either as a unitary body or as a plurality of interfitting parts. The base is provided with an elongated extension detachably and adjustably mounted perpendicularly to the bearing portion and having means at the free end thereof for supporting a drive mechanism, including a belt drive pulley aligned with the groove means on said drum.

Abstract:

A hand-operated mixing device is provided in which a mixing drum, having an open end, a closed end and divergently tapered circumferential walls extending from the ends to an enlarged diameter portion intermediate the ends, an annular groove at the outer periphery of the enlarged diameter portion, and the closed end having a detachably mounted crank member terminating in a bearing shaft coaxial with the drum axis, the drum being detachably mounted on a light-weight frame having at the forward portion thereof transversely spaced rollers for engagement with the annular groove, and at the rear portion thereof a bearing orifice detachably receiving the bearing shaft of the crank handle, the positioning of the rollers and bearing orifice being such as to orient the drum axis at an angle of about 10-20" to the horizontal to thereby elevate the open end of the drum, the light-weight frame being of knockdown construction having parts of such dimension as to permit packing when disassembled in a container adapted to closely receive the mixing drum, and the light-weight frame, when assembled, having wheels at the base of the frame and a handle at the rear portion thereof facilitating transport of the mixing drum and contents.

Abstract:

A resilient safety extension is provided for highway barriers of the type having a broad base and upstanding central portion with opposed convergently tapered surfaces and a length which is infinitely variable, in the form of an elongated resilient member having an inverted generally U-shaped transverse configuration provided by a top portion and spaced downwardly extending portions adapted to straddle the upstanding portion of the highway barrier, the downwardly extending portions being convergently tapered to provide inner surfaces closely interfitting with the upstanding portion of the barrier and outer surfaces which are slightly divergent in the direction of the top portion, and the thickness of the downwardly extending portions being variable by amounts of the order of 2 inches to provide sinusoidally curved outer surface patterns, repeating at approximately 24" intervals longitudinally of the safety extension. The safety extension is preferably prefabricated in unit lengths of four feet to six feet by the blow-molding or rotation-molding of appropriate plastic material to form hollow bodies with resilience controlled by the wall thickness and the plastic material employed. Alternatively, the safety extensions can be fashioned as solid bodies of foamed plastic material with resilience provided by the nature of the material and extent of foaming.

Abstract:

A shock-absorbing and motorist warning highway barrier is provided comprising a plurality of elongated upstanding units adapted to be joined in end to end relation, each unit comprising an outwardly flared base and an upstanding central portion having interfitting protrusions at opposed ends thereof facilitating end to end coupling of adjacent units, opposed side surfaces of the upstanding portion having a plurality of transversely aligned and longitudinally spaced recesses to receive resilient cylindrical members in a manner to protrude substantially from such surfaces, the cylindrical members being insertable and removable through the top of the unit and being secured in place by a cover member having downward protrusions interfitting with the aligned recesses in said unit. In preferred adaptations each unit may have a sinusoidal contour in the longitudinal dimension incorporating two sine curves, and/or the recesses and cylindrical members mounted therein may be outwardly inclined about 5. degree. to 10. degree. from the vertical.

Abstract:

A dynamic reef is provided in accordance with the invention. The dynamic reef includes anchoring means for anchoring the reef in a substantially fixed position with respect to a shoreline, an elastic rubber tubing secured to the anchoring means, and at least one flotation collar positioned so as to be rotatable about the rubber tubing for the purpose of dissipating wave energy. A solar strobe unit may be positioned on the rubber tubing at the end opposite the anchoring means and functions as a warning device. A method for preventing shoreline erosion and a system for reducing the effects of waves on a shoreline are also provided in accordance with the invention.
