Abstract:Chlorosulfonated polyethylene materials having (a) weight average molecular weight of from about 40,000 to about 300,000, (b) a chemically combined chlorine content of from about 20 to about 50 percent by weight of polymer, (c) a chemically combined sulfur content of from about 0. 8 to about 2. 5 percent by weight of polymer and (d) a 100 percent modulus of from about 0. 6 to about 4. 8 megapascals are prepared in an anhydrous process wherein an amorphous chlorinated polyethylene starting material is first fluidized and then exposed to a gaseous mixture of sulfur dioxide and chlorine having a ratio of sulfur dioxide to chlorine of from about 1:1 to about 16:1 in the presence of a chlorine free radical generator such as ultraviolet light, at a temperature of from about 25. degree. to about 100. degree. Centigrade, for a period of two hours or less.

Abstract:Generally disclosed is a filtration system including a pair of filters having a pair of diverter valves connected at the input and output thereof for controlling the flow of viscous fluids through one of the other of the filters. More specifically, there is disclosed a diverter valve for controlling viscous fluid flow at the input and output of the filters. The diverter valve is a slide valve which provides a fluid flow path which has no isolated flow areas subject to stagnation. The diverter valve is constructed of a slide plate sandwiched between a manifold block and a backing plate. The slide plate defines a passageway which mates with ports provided in a sealing surface of the manifold block so that a continuous flow path is provided between inlet and outlet of the diverter valve. Sealing pressure is maintained between the slide plate and the manifold block by a plurality of tie bolts urging the slide plate into contact with the manifold block.

Abstract:Process and apparatus for extruding synthetic resinous thermoplastic materials, wherein a heat plastified stream of such material is divided into a primary or core stream, and non-primary or secondary stream(s), the secondary stream(s) heated to a temperature substantially hotter than the core stream, and the hot secondary stream(s) thereafter layered onto the opposite surfaces of the core stream prior to expelling the material from an extrusion die. Abstract:Thermoplastic vulcanizates are prepared by curing, at least partially by dynamic vulcanization, blends of chlorinated polyethylene and crystalline thermoplastic polymers such as polypropylene. Inclusion of a plasticizing material or extender oil, e. g. trioctyl trimellitate, enhances softness and oil resistance of the blends. Vulcanizing materials include a basic material, normally added with the chlorinated polyethylene, and (1) a derivative of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3, 4-thiadiazole or (2) a combination of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole and an activator material such as an amine having a boiling point of 110. degree. C. or higher and a pk value less than 4. 5.
