Abstract:
A catalyst bed assembly, comprising: an outer housing having an open interior, an inlet leading to the open interior, and an outlet from the open interior; a catalyst bed in the open interior; and a gap between the outer housing and the catalyst bed. The open interior receives material from the inlet. A portion of the material enters the catalyst bed to expose said material to a catalyst so that the material and the catalyst react and create heat within the catalyst bed assembly. A remainder of the material enters the gap between the outer housing and the catalyst bed to cool the catalyst bed assembly. The catalyst bed assembly could be part of a turbopump assembly. The turbopump assembly would further include a nozzle downstream of the outlet; a turbine downstream of the nozzle; and a pump driven by said turbine.

Abstract:
A gas dynamic laser is formed having a combustor with a cylindrical combustion chamber, said combustion chamber is formed having a discharge opening at one end and primary injection means at the other end with a plurality of injector tubes for injecting a combustible mixture into said combustion chamber; an igniter is included for igniting said mixture; a secondary injection means is located adjacent the discharge opening and has a plurality of nozzle tubes for injecting an oxidizer, one nozzle tube being included for each injector tube; each cooperating nozzle tube and injector tube being axially aligned, with said nozzle tubes directing the oxidizer towards the injector tubes, a mixing chamber being located downstream of the secondary injection means for directing the gases to a nozzle array. The secondary injection means is constructed to have easy accessibility to the nozzle tubes.

Abstract:
A turbofan-ramjet engine is provided with optional duct burning in the turbofan mode. A core engine is provided with a first annular passage therearound for directing airflow around the inlet of the core engine. A second annular passage having a fan directs air flow into the inlet of the core engine and said first annular passage. A third annular passage extends around the first and second annular passage with the first and third annular passage each directing their flow into a common annular combustion chamber. Variable vanes are provided in the first and third annular passages to provide for blocking off the passage or acting as swirl vanes depending on mode of operation. Blocking vanes are also provided in the annular exhaust passage of the core engine. Coannular nozzles are provided with one located at the exhaust of the core engine and an outer one located aft of the common annular combustion chamber. Air bleed means are provided for providing a positive pressure behind vanes in the first or third annular passage when either one is placed in its flow-blocking position to prevent undesired propagation of flame into that passage.

Abstract:
A segmented, zoned fuel injection system for use within the entrance area of a combustor. The fuel injection system has a plurality of spray bars formed as part of closely-spaced apart segments. The spray bars are zoned to permit additional control of profile and flow rate of fuel injected into the combustor. This design permits radial profile control within the combustor, maintains higher efficiency at low fuel flows and easy replacement and/or maintenance of the components thereof.

Abstract:
A gas turbine engine combustor can operate on either liquid fuel or gaseous fuel while maintaining low levels of nitrous oxide emissions. An upstream end of each of a plurality of mixing tubes includes an external manifold that is supplied with gaseous fuel. The gaseous fuel is injected into the mixing tubes through a plurality of orifices with sufficient momentum to be uniformly distributed across the flow path of each mixing tube. The optimum fuel/air ratio for low nitrous oxide emissions does not exceed seventy five percent (75%) of the stoichiometric ratio for a given fuel.
