Abstract:
An apparatus for detecting particles in a sample of gas is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a single optical radiation source, a sensor head, and detection electronics. The sensor head comprises a housing having an elliptical cross section. The sensor head receives optical radiation from the source through a fiber optic line at the first focus, and a detector is located at the second focus. The detector receives radiation scattered and emitted by particles in the light beam at the first focus. The detection electronics determine the presence, and in one embodiment the identity, of particles based on the radiation incident on the detector.
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, And Nuclear Weapon Detection System With Alarm Thresholds Based On Environmental Factors

Abstract:
A chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapon detection system is disclosed that incorporates a mechanism to reduce the probability that a false alarm will be issued. In particular, the mechanism causes an alarm to be triggered when the amount of a hazardous material reaches a threshold, but changes the threshold based, at least in part, on environmental (e. g. , meteorological, etc. ) characteristics (e. g. , whether is it precipitating or not, whether it is sunny or not, etc) that effect the efficacy of a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weapon. Given that there are environmental factors that make an attack less effective, and given that terrorists are aware of this, the illustrative embodiment is less likely to issue an alarm when the environmental factors suggest that an attack is less effective, and, therefore, less likely. The illustrative embodiment accomplishes this by changing the threshold needed to issue an alarm based on one or more the environmental factors.

Abstract:
A building protection system comprises a filtration unit, an air handling unit, an emergency exhaust subsystem, a first damper positioned between the filtration unit and the air handling unit, and a second damper positioned between the emergency exhaust subsystem and the filtration unit. The first damper is selectively opened and the second damper is selectively closed to filter outside air as it enters a building, and the first damper is selectively closed and the second damper is selectively opened to filter inside air as it is exhausted from, the building.
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, And Nuclear Weapon Detection System With Environmental Acuity
A chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapon detection system is disclosed that heightens its acuity and alertness when it senses that a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weapon attack is more likely. For example, it is well understood that a chemical gas attack is likely to be less effective when it is raining than when it is clear because the rain will suppress and dilute the chemical agent. Therefore, the likelihood of a chemical gas attack is higher when it is clear. In light of this and similar knowledge, the illustrative embodiment checks for evidence of an attack more frequently and with great acuity than when the ambient environmental (e. g. , meteorological, etc. ) characteristics (e. g. , whether is it precipitating or not, whether it is sunny or not, etc) suggest that an attack is more likely.

Abstract:
Pulse position coding is used to transmit several channels of data from a ground radar transmitter to a receiver in an airborne, remotely-piloted vehicle. The system is designed to ignore interfering pulses, especially those which are synchronized with the transmitter's PRF, by combining a number of noise reduction devices. These include the redundant transmission of address and channel information, the transmission of true and complemented data, the tracking of channels transmitted in a predetermined order, developing an interference count to recognize synchronous pulses, comparing data received for a given channel with data subsequently received for that channel, the use of windows around the expected positions of pulses, and the use of parity. There is also a novel programming arrangement which enables several programs to be stored in a reduced amount of memory space.

Abstract:
A method is shown for providing stable communication between a hub earth-station and a VSAT earth-station by regulating the power of signals transmitted via a satellite. In this method, the hub receives a beacon signal from the satellite and a previous outbound signal. The hub then regulates the power of an outbound signal transmitted by the hub to VSAT via the satellite, based on either the beacon signal or the previous outbound signal. The hub then sends a current outbound signal, including signal data and parameter data to the VSAT via the satellite. The VSAT receives the current outbound signal and determines a number of signal properties pertaining to the current outbound signal. The VSAT then regulates the power of an inbound signal transmitted by the VSAT to the hub via the satellite, based on the signal properties, the parameter data, and a set of reference data.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for receiving and processing burst-mode code-division multiple access (CDMA) direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) signals is provided. In this apparatus and method, a number of demodulators are provided in a set enumerated order. Each demodulator is either "ready," meaning that it is free to process signals, or busy meaning that it is currently processing a signal. The ready demodulators each receive an input IF signal and try to detect a preamble in the IF signal. Once they detect the preamble, each ready demodulator then sends a request signal to an arbitrator. In response to a received request signal, the arbitrator sends a grant signal to the first ready demodulator in the enumerated order. This grant signal passes through each busy demodulator that is higher in the enumerated order than the first ready demodulator. The first ready demodulator then begins processing the signal, and is moved from the set of ready demodulators to the set of busy demodulators.
