Abstract:

Methods of manufacturing nano-engineered carbon materials, such as carbon aerogels and carbon xerogels, and methods of manufacturing precursor solutions and sol-gels for making the same are provided. A method for manufacturing a precursor solution comprises programmed-addition of a cross-linking agent to a component mixture comprising a resorcinol compound. A method for manufacturing a sol-gel comprises subjecting a precursor solutions to at least one heat treatment. Methods for producing nano-engineered carbon materials from precursor solutions and sol-gels are also provided. Methods for using the nano-engineered carbon materials are also disclosed. The resulting nano-engineered carbon materials can be useful in a range of products including, supercapacitor applications, high-surface-area electrodes, fuel cells, and desalination systems.

A dispenser for dispensing foamable compositions includes a first module comprising a first housing, a fluid flow fitting in the first housing, a shutoff valve in the first housing and in fluid communication with the fluid flow fitting. The dispenser further includes a second module comprising: a second housing, a valving chamber in the second housing for receiving fluid from the shutoff valve and the fluid flow fitting; and an attachment for securing the first and second modules to one another with the valving chamber in fluid communication with the shutoff valve and the fluid flow fitting so that foam precursors can travel from the foam fittings to the valving chamber, and be dispensed from the chamber to form foam.

Abstract:

Documents are encoded with at least one thin, transparent coating, normally invisible, but having a readily detectable physical characteristic such as, electrical conductivity, electrical impedance, electrical capacitance, electroluminescence. Each document consists of a substrate on which is applied (1) at least one of the thin coatings, and (2) conventional printing, preferably intaglio. The thin coating may be applied before or after the printing. The coating includes particles driven into the surface to a substantial depth. The uncoated substrate is free of the detectable physical characteristic. The coating is confined to a limited area of the substrate surface and itself constitutes a code or is laid down in a pattern for identification. A second coating can be applied so that all areas of the surface have the same appearance to mask visual detection of the first coating. The first coating can be of such a nature as to defeat electrostatic copying, particular, color copying, by effecting a discernible difference between the original and the copy.

A method of forming patterned film onto a substrate includes the steps of: depositing a polyether sulfone release layer 50; depositing a photoresist underlayer 52; patterning a predetermined film pattern through the underlayer 52 and the polyether sulfone layer 50; depositing a film layer 60 onto the wafer, thereby forming a patterned film 62 on the substrate 10; weakening the mechanical bonding strength to the polyether sulfone release layer 50 by immersing it in NMP; stripping off layers 54 and 60 by applying an adhesive backed tape 64 to the top of the film layer and applying a pulling force; and, removing the polyether sulfone release layer 50 by immersing the wafer in a NMP bath.

Abstract:

A battery separator includes a porous substrate and a thermal fuse material adhered to at least one surface of said porous substrate. The thermal fuse material is adhered to the substrate surface in a predetermined geometric array thereupon so as to establish open areas of the at least one substrate surface to thereby allow ionic migration therethrough. The thermal fuse material forming the geometric array on the substrate surface may itself define open pores to further facilitate such ionic migration. The thermal fuse material melts at or near a predetermined threshold temperature so that the substrate's permeability irreversibly becomes significantly decreased and thus interrupts the chemical reaction in an electrochemical battery. In such a manner, batteries of improved safety may be provided using the separators of this invention.

Abstract:

A pie, such as a meat or fruit pie, having a bottom crust which is suitable for baking and browning in a microwave oven is provided. A preferred bottom crust contains a reducing sugar such as dextrose, an amino acid source such as whey solids, a dough conditioner to prevent dough shrinkage and a leavening agent to enhance browning and to provide a puffy crust. The pie filling contains less than 90 weight % water. The pie is supported in a tray composed of a microwave-interactive material which heats upon exposure to microwaves. The bottom crust of the pie browns as a result of several browning phenomena including low temperature Maillard browning reactions and high temperature caramelization reactions.

In some embodiments, the recognition results produced by a speech processing system (which may include two or more recognition results, including a top recognition result and one or more alternative recognition results) based on an analysis of a speech input, are evaluated for indications of potential significant errors. In some embodiments, the recognition results may be evaluated to determine whether a meaning of any of the alternative recognition results differs from a meaning of the top recognition result in a manner that is significant for a domain, such as the medical domain. In some embodiments, words and/or phrases that may be confused by an ASR system may be determined and associated in sets of words and/or phrases. Words and/or phrases that may be determined include those that change a meaning of a phrase or sentence when included in the phrase/sentence.
