Abstract:

There is disclosed a cargo restraint for palletized cargo which is detachably secured to rails or frame members such as a conventional seat rail in an aircraft cargo hold. The restraint includes a frame and a folding assembly of a pawl plate member with fore and aft folding support links therefor whereby the pawl plate member can be folded into a retracted position, within the confines of the frame and elevated therefrom into an elevated, cargo pallet engaging position. The pawl plate member extends fore and aft of the support links to restrain the edges of adjacent cargo pallets. The frame is provided with a transverse web immediately forward of the support links to serve as an abutment stop therefor, restraining the links in the extended position and accommodating high acceleration forces in a forward direction. The assembly is provided with a resilient springs to urge it into the retracted position and a locking member secures the assembly in the extended position against the bias of the resilient springs.

Abstract:

Two or more parallel waveguide lasers of different effective length are coupled together by their evanescent waves such that the composite structure functions as a single cavity having a longitudinal mode with resonances related to the resonances of the separate cavities. A very strong selection of the composite operating frequency, and suppression of most or all of the other longitudinal modes, with frequency tuning of the composite structure (both continuously and by mode hopping), can be accomplished by varying the relative currents supplied to each laser. Upon holding one cavity at one current level for a selected operating point and shifting the other, bistable operation can be achieved.

Abstract:

A switchable DFB (distributed feedback) laser which includes a waveguide layer having an impressed diffraction grating composed of two or more superposed subgratings having different respective grating constants. The diffraction grating is either frequency modulated (FIG. 3a) or amplitude modulated (FIG. 3b) or is a mixed form of these two types of modulation. Each subgrating can be employed to generate an emission wavelength that is a function of the grating period. By changing the temperature or changing the injection current, the effective index of refraction of the laser is changed, thus enabling the setting of an emission wavelength which is a function of the modulated diffraction grating. The switchable DFB laser according to the present invention may be employed for optical data transmission and particularly in narrowband wavelength multiplex operation.

Strained layer single or multiple quantum well lasers include an InP substrate, a pair of lattice-matched InGaAsP quarternary layers epitaxially grown on the substrate surrounding a pair of lattice matched In. sub. 53 Ga. sub. 47 As ternary layers surrounding one or more strained active layers of epitaxially grown, lattice-mismatched In. sub. 75 Ga. sub. 25 As. The level of strain is selected to control the bandgap energy to produce laser output having a wavelength in the range of 1. 6 to 2. 5. mu. m. The multiple quantum well structure uses between each active layer. Diethyl zinc is used for p-type dopant in an InP cladding layer at a concentration level in the range of about 5. times. 10. sup. 17 /cm. sup. 3 to about 2. times. 10. sup. 18 /cm. sup. 3. Abstract:

Surface-emitting distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are disclosed with hybrid gratings. A first-order grating is provided at one or both ends of the active region of the laser for retroreflection of light back into the active region, and a second-order or nonresonant grating is provided at the opposite end for coupling light out perpendicular to the surface of the laser or in some other selected direction. The gratings may be curved to focus light retroreflected into the active region and to focus light coupled out to a point P. When so focused to a point, the DFB laser may be part of a monolithic read head for a laser recorded disk, or an optical coupler into an optical fiber.
