Abstract:

A hand held device for examining a patient's retina. In one example, the device generates visible or non-visible illuminating beams having desired spectral content. The illuminating beams are then polarized to generate polarized light beam(s) that are directed towards the patient's retina. At the patient's eye, a portion of the polarized beam is partially reflected by the cornea and travels back to the device, and another portion of the polarized beam enters the eye through the undilated pupil, illuminates the patient's retina, and generates a reflected retinal image (generally de-polarized) which also travels back to the device. The device receives the retinal image and transmits certain portions of the retinal image on through to an image detector (i. e. , CCD or CMOS); and the device deflects the received polarized corneal reflections away from the image capture device. Hence, the image capture device receives retinal images but does not receive the polarized corneal reflected light.

Abstract:

Blood constituents are separated by centrifugation in a transparent tube which contains a float for physically elongating certain of the constituents. The centrifuged sample in the tube is positioned on a layer measuring device with which red cell and buffy coat constituent band heights can be measured in ambient light. The buffy coat constituent measurements are made under optical magnification. The measuring device has a mathematically derived red cell layer nomogram printed thereon, and a separate scale for measuring buffy coat constituent bands. Conversion tables are provided for converting the measured buffy coat constituent band lengths into constituent cell counts. The measuring device includes tube-engaging portions for properly positioning the tube during the measurements, and the red cell scale automatically compensates for the presence of the float and densification of red cells needed for proper banding.

Abstract:

This invention relates to the use of microorganisms for the generation of ethanol from lignocellulosic waste materials. Yeast strains of the genus which have the capability to ferment cellulose, hexose sugars to ethanol are provided. Also provided are methods for converting cellulose, hexoses, or mixed hydrolysates of hexoses to ethanol by fermentation with strains. The invention also provides methods to isolate yeast strains which metabolize cellulose, pentoses, or hemicelluloses from waste materials.
