Abstract:

A method for restoring or touching-up blemishes, such as scratches and chips in an automotive paint finish, includes the steps of applying a measured bead of relatively thick matching touch-up paint to a flexible blade and drawing the flexible blade across the blemish to deposit the touch-up paint in the blemish to restore the blemish. A tool for restoring or touching-up blemishes such as scratches and chips in an automotive paint finish, includes a squeezable paint bottle that forms the handle of the tool, a coupler threaded at one end onto the bottle, a blade holder extending from the other end of the coupler to a forward edge, a flexible blade projecting from the forward edge of the blade holder to a free edge, and a nozzle projecting from the forward edge of the blade holder toward the free edge of the flexible blade. A passageway communicates between the squeezable bottle and the vicinity of the blade to deposit a measured amount of touch-up paint onto the blade when the bottle is squeezed, the blade subsequently being drawn over a blemish to deposit the touch-up paint in the blemish.

An improved process of matching the color of a paint to the pre-existing color of a vehicle is provided. The process includes the steps of exposing a photo-reactive film to the surface of the vehicle whose paint color is to be matched. Once exposed, pigments in the film are activated to mimic precisely the color of the vehicle. The pigments are then extracted, isolated and mixed with a neutral base paint solution, which is tinted by the pigments to match the color of the vehicle. The tinted and matched solution is used for painting or touch-up work on the vehicle.

Abstract:

A sheet metal forming tool is designed to remove raised eyebrows surrounding dents in the body of a vehicle before the dent itself is pulled back to a flush configuration. The tool comprises a pneumatic hammer driver provided with a special attachment having a body and a plastic head. The head is formed of plastic and is configured to define a ring-shaped support base that surrounds a dome-shaped hammer pad. A hammer within the tool impacts the back of the hammer pad at a frequency of between 2000 and 5000 impacts per minute, each impact moving the hammer pad slightly outwardly with respect to the plane of the support base. In use, the head is placed over an eyebrow to be treated with the support base resting on the surface surrounding the eyebrow and the hammer pad overlying the eyebrow. The tool is then actuated and moved along the eyebrow until it is bent back down flush with the surrounding surface.

Abstract:

A dent-pulling tool for pulling dents out of the surface of sheet metal body panels of a vehicle is provided. The tool includes a specially shaped adapter or cup that is adhered to the dent with adhesive. The adapter has at least one groove, or similar formation, on the contact surface thereof to optimize adhesion. The tool also includes a removable base having a non-marring material bonded thereto. The base may include one or more adjustable feet that stabilize the tool during use. The pulling tool is attached to the adapter and continuous controlled pulling force is applied to the adapter to pull the dent back into place. The pulling tool may be ratchet, screw, pneumatically, or hydraulically activated.
