Abstract:

A fiber optic system for permitting viewing of any of a plurality of selectable remote scenes in hostile environments by direct image transmission to the observer outside of the environment of the scenes. An optical image of each scene is transmitted by separate fiber optic bundles to an optical selector system which redirects the transmitted image through a single bundle where the image is presented in a form for viewing by the observer. The system is particularly useful in troublesome environments such as are encountered in the high pressures outside vessels or noise radiation sources where conventional television viewing systems can be used only with special insulation or containment.

Abstract:

Apparatus for indicating with precision relative rotation in terms of integral numbers of relatively large basic angular intervals and small angular deviations from such intervals. A portion of the apparatus is typically mounted to a rotatable support where it is desired to measure and calibrate, with great precision, the angular position of the support every fixed number of degrees, such as one or ten degrees, and to measure offsets from integral numbers of such basic angular intervals. The apparatus comprises two slightly non-parallel mirror surfaces rotatable with the support and illuminated by an autocollimator. The mirrors provide multiple reflections of the illumination. The angle between the mirrors define the basic angular interval. The number of reflections varies with the number of basic angular intervals of support rotation. At each precise integral number of basic intervals, the illumination will return to a fixed location on the autocollimator viewing screen.

Abstract:

A fiber optic lens including: an input aperture; an output aperture; and a fiber optic array interconnecting the input and output apertures, including multiplicity of single mode fiber optic elements of equal optical path length for transmitting light rays in-phase from the input aperture to the output aperture; the fiber optic elements are interconnected at the same relative location at each aperture for receiving the wave front at the input aperture and producing an image at the focal point of the output aperture and having a diffraction limit which is a function of the diameter of the entire fiber optic array.

Abstract:

A small angle generating apparatus is described for deviating optical beams y accurately measurable small angles to calibrate autocollimators or the like. It includes a double mirror combination which is mounted on an elongated mechanical beam which is rotatable about a pivot at one end of the beam by means of a micrometer coupled at the opposite end thereof. Rotation of the double mirror combination deviates a beam of light from a test autocollimator from its original position either horizontally or vertically through a small angle which is linearly proportional to the angular rotation of the mechanical beam.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for generating small angles for calibrating autocomators or the like is described. It includes a small angle wedge which is rigidly attached to a mechanical beam which is rotatable about a pivot point. The rotation of wedge causes a very small deviation in the line of sight of an autocollimator under test after passing through the wedge and thus gives a large optical advantage.
