  • Method Of Separating Organic Contaminants From Fluid Feedstreams With Polyphosphazene Membranes

    view source
  • US Patent:
    50229966, Jun 11, 1991
  • Filed:
    Apr 30, 1990
  • Appl. No.:
    7/516400
  • Inventors:
Robert R. McCaffrey - Milford MA
Daniel G. Cummings - Idaho Falls ID
  • Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the United States
Department of Energy - Washington DC
  • International Classification:
    B01D 614
  • US Classification:
    210654
  • Abstract:
A method is provided for separating halogenated hydrocarbons from a fluid feedstream. The fluid feedstream is flowed across a first surface of a polyphosphazene semipermeable membrane. At least one halogenated hydrocarbon from the fluid feedstream permeates through the polyphosphazene semipermeable membrane to a second opposed surface of the semipermeable membrane. Then the permeated polar hydrocarbon is removed from the second opposed surface of the polyphosphazene semipermeable membrane. Outstanding and unexpected separation selectivities on the order of 10,000 were obtained for methylene chloride when a methylene chloride in water feedstream was flowed across the polyphosphazene semipermeable membrane in the invented method.

  • Abstract:
An electrochemical sensor is designed for use in detecting a concentration of an analyte in a sample solution. The sensor to have a longer useful lifetime, improved stability and improved response time for single or multiple use applications. In one aspect, some of these goals are achieved by providing the multilayer enzyme electrode membrane having both nonporous and microporous layers. The microporous layer is formed from a polymer binder, a polymer powder, a surfactant and a mineral powder. In another aspect, certain of these goals are achieved by the use of a layer comprised of an enzyme disposed within a polymer matrix. In certain embodiments, the multilayer enzyme electrode membrane includes an outermost layer which is capable of dissolving in the sample solution such that the interface between the multilayer enzyme electrode membrane and the sample solution is continually renewed. The sensor provides an electrical current output proportional to the reagent chemical interaction of the analyte with an immobilized enzyme layer during exposure of the sensor in such solution.
