Abstract:

A downhole viscosity sensor and related systems and methods are disclosed. The sensor includes a first fluid flow path including a turbine and a velocity sensor, a second fluid flow path including a second turbine and a second velocity sensor, a mechanical or electrical linkage linking the first turbine and second turbine to cause the turbines to rotate in unison. The sensor also includes a field generator, which may be a magnetic field or electric field generator. The first fluid flow path includes an open flow path for receiving a fluid from a formation and the second fluid flow path includes a closed flow path having a reference fluid that has a variable but known viscosity.

Abstract:

Systems and related methods are disclosed that involve the use of a magnetic downhole assembly or a magnetic downhole tool. The assembly and tool include a mu-metal sleeve that is operable to isolate a magnetic field and a permanent magnet disposed within the mu-metal sleeve. The assembly and tool also include an actuator that is operable to selectively extend and retract the sleeve to alternatingly expose and shield the permanent magnet. A conveyance is operable to deploy the magnetic downhole assembly and tool to a selected location within a wellbore and a controller is communicatively coupled to the actuator and operable to generate a control signal that causes the actuator to extend or retract the permanent magnet from the mu-metal sleeve.

Abstract:

Systems and related methods are disclosed for applying electrorheological fluids in hydro-carbon-producing environments. The systems include a fluid-retaining member having a conductive inner surface and a conductive outer surface. The fluid-retaining member retains a smart fluid. The systems also include a controller that is electrically coupled to a power source and at least one of the conductive inner surface and conductive outer surface of the fluid-retaining member to actuate an electric field or magnetic field across fluid-retaining member. Actuation of the electric field or magnetic field results in a near instantaneous increase in the viscosity of the fluid, causing the fluid to solidify, nearly solidify, gel or otherwise increase in viscosity. The actuated fluid retaining member may be used as a well casing, an isolator, a blowout inhibitor, or in a well insulation system to absorb energy in the event of an explosion.

The supercapacitor device can include a body that can be disposed in the wellbore, a supercapacitor disposed in the body, at least two terminals disposed at least partially outside the body, and an actuation mechanism. The supercapacitor stores energy. The terminals can be electrically connected with the supercapacitor.
