Abstract:

An armored cord has flexibility and tensile strength for securing a telephone handset to a telephone housing. The cord includes an outer armored sheath which is designed for increased flexibility in that it allows the cord to bend readily over small radii. Tensile strength between the handset and housing is provided by an internal cable which absorbs the stress applied to the cord when subjected to unusually large longitudinal forces. The service life of the cord is lengthened, and the number of incidents causing out-of-service conditions is thereby reduced.

Abstract:

A printed wiring board connector comprises a rigid, dielectric surface with an opening therein. Mounted on the rigid surface are various components and conductive paths; the components include jumper wires that span the opening and are mechanically attached to the rigid surface on opposite sides of the opening. The jumper wires are electrically connected to the conductive paths. The printed wiring board connector is joined with a base unit which comprises a rigid, dielectric structure having connector housing molded therein that extends through the opening in the printed wiring board and includes wire-receiving slots for supporting the jumper wires. In one assembly, the connector housing includes metallic connectors positioned between a lead frame associated with the base unit and the jumper wires. In another assembly, the connector housing includes pairs of slots for facilitating electrical connections. Insulation-displacement connectors are used for easy attachment to the printed wiring board connector.

Abstract:

An improved electrical jack assembly (20) for converting to modular use a telephone terminal block (10) with screw terminals (11) is disclosed. Leads (32) in the jack assembly connect at one end (31) to contact elements (27) in a modular jack (22) affixed to an assembly housing (21) and at the other end (33) to screw-engaging connectors (34), each of which comprises a body (37) of conductive material with a base (40) and a plurality of resilient elongate members (42) extended therefrom. The free end portions (45) of the members (42) include sharp-pointed contact tips (47). The free end portions (45) also tend toward one another to define with their tips (47) an opening (48) for snugly receiving a head (12) of an assigned screw terminal (11), where the tips (47) can bear against the screw head (12) to effect reliable electrical and mechanical connection.

Abstract:

A tool for stripping insulation from coaxial or multiple conductor cables is disclosed. The tool consists of a support assembly (1) with an integrally connected spring (5) which swivels between an up and down position. The support assembly (1) contains a channel (2) which runs along its length where the spring (5) rests in its down position. A semicircular slot (4) receives the insulated cable. Embedded within support assembly (1) is a knife blade (7), a portion of which is exposed in the slot (4). The knife blade penetrates the insulation when the spring (5) is in its down position causing an incision through the insulation. A ring is placed at one end of the tool in which the user can insert a finger and thereby twirl the tool around to effect relative rotation of the tool and cable to cut through the cable over its entire circumference.

Abstract:

A technique for permanently joining thermoplastic parts in a single stroke converts kinetic energy into thermal energy. In this technique, one of the thermoplastic parts includes a linear shaft while the other includes a cavity having the same general shape but being slightly smaller in its cross-section. The thermoplastic parts are permanently joined when the shaft is thrust into the cavity at a velocity that exceeds a predetermined minimum value which is a function of the thermoplastic materials used and the relative dimensions of the shaft and cavity. An interference fit between the shaft and cavity causes frictional heat to be generated which melts the contacting surfaces and thus welds the parts together after a brief cooling period.

Abstract:

A connector is disclosed that includes spring contacts (200) for making a solderless connection to other electrical conductors (310). Each spring contact (200) has a loop contact portion (230) that is supported so that its end regions (232 and 234) are restrained in a direction generally normal to the site of engagement of its arcuate contact surface (236) with the other electrical conductor (310). As a result, the main region (235) of the loop contact portion (230) is essentially rotated rather than compressed when pressed into engagement with the other electrical conductor (310). The desired contact force necessary for a good solderless electric connection is thereby provided.

Abstract:

An audible signal generator comprises a coil, a pole piece, and an armature movably mounted with respect to the pole piece so that one end of the armature approaches the pole piece upon energization of the coil. The pole piece has a pair of spaced protrusions that extend toward the one end of the armature, and a cantilever spring member is supported on the pole piece so as to extend between the spaced protrusions. The one end of the armature has a protrusion that extends toward the pole piece and is located so as to engage the portion of the spring member in between the spaced protrusions of the pole piece.
