Abstract:
A method of forming a beta-alumina article includes electrophoretically depositing such material on a mandrel, exposing the deposited material promptly to a continuous flow of warm air thereby drying the deposited material, and sintering the dried material. Alternately, the deposited material is stored in a chamber purged continuously with an inert gas until the material is dried in a flow of warm dry air. Such articles are useful as solid electrolytes in sodium-sulfur and sodium halogen batteries.
Method Of Producing Lithiated Beta-Alumina Articles
A method of producing lithiated beta-alumina articles includes electrophoretically codepositing such material onto a mandrel from two powders, drying the deposited material, and sintering the dried material. Such articles are useful as containers for sodium and as solid electrolytes in sodium-sulfur and sodium halogen batteries.

Abstract:
A composite beta, mainly beta"-alumina article is described which comprises a first layer of beta-alumina, a second layer of mainly beta"-alumina adhering securely to the first layer, and the first layer consisting of 1 to 15 percent thickness of the total thickness of the article. A method is also described for producing such composite articles.

Abstract:
A cell casing and a hermetically sealed sodium-sulfur cell are disclosed wherein the cell casing includes a hermetic mechanical seal joining two opposed outer metallic casing portions to a ceramic ring supporting an inner casing of a solid sodium ion-conductive material. A hermetically sealed sodium-sulfur cell has the above type of casing with a sodium negative electrode in the inner casing and a positive electrode of sulfur in conductive material in an outer casing portion surrounding the inner casing.
Method Of Preparing A Suspension Of Additive-Free Beta-Alumina Particles
A method of preparing a suspension of additive-free beta-alumina particles includes vibromilling water free beta-alumina particles of a diameter larger than 2 microns in an organic fluid having a dielectric constant at 25. degree. C of from 12 to 24 with beta-alumina grinding media. The resulting suspension is useful for forming beta-alumina articles by electrophoretic deposition.

Abstract:
A process for the formation of alumina containing carbon fiber mats is provided. The process comprises dispersing an alumina precursor solution in the mat, converting the precursor to an insoluble hydroxide precipitate and hydrolizing the precipitate to form alumina nodules dispersed throughout the mat. Also provided is an alumina containing carbon fiber mat comprising carbon fibers and nodules of alumina, which are substantially uniformly dispersed throughout the mat, and a sodium sulfur cell having a sulfur compartment containing such a mat.

Whitey Bulger writes teens in letter: "My life was wasted"
The students' project took first place in the district, but didn't place in the state competition, though it won two special awards. Robert Powers, the social studies teacher supervising the project, said the girls took a creative risk that succeeded even if they didn't win.
