Abstract:

A reciprocating doctor is provided for doctoring the cylindrical surface of a roll rotating about a first axis. The doctor includes a doctor back with a blade holder carrying a doctor blade. The doctor back has journals aligned on a second axis parallel to the first rotational axis of the roll. The journals are rotatably supported in sleeve bearings, and the sleeve bearings are in turn supported by diaphragms spaced along the second axis. The sleeve bearings are fixed axially on their respective journals, and the diaphragms have hub portions surrounding and fixed relative to the sleeve bearings, and peripheral portions surrounding the hub portions and fixed relative to a support structure. The diaphragms are configured to resiliently accommodate reciprocating movement of their hub portions and associated sleeve bearings relative to their peripheral portions and associated support structure. A first operating mechanism serves to rotate the doctor back about the second axis, and a second operating mechanism serves to impart reciprocating movement to the journals and their sleeve bearings along the second axis.

Abstract:

A low-cost floating drifter adapted to accurately follow near-surface ocean currents and transmit periodically to monitoring satellites data and position-determining information. Global tracking of ocean currents is made economically and scientifically feasible by the use of large numbers of such drifters. The drifter includes a floating surface buoy in the approximate shape of an oblate spheroid and containing an electronic system, a slotted plane antenna, transmitter, sunrise and sunset detector, environmental sensors, buoy hull strain sensor and battery power supply. The surface buoy is stabilized and induced to follow ocean currents by a drogue suspended from the bottom center surface. The drogue includes a wire-cored buoyant rope of up to hundreds of meters in length and weighted to a slight negative buoyancy. The drogue may also include an elongated cylindrical sock of substantially greater diameter than the rope.

Barium titanate based dielectric compositions having the general formula Ba. sub. (1-x-x'-x") Pb. sub. x Ca. sub. x' Sr. sub. x" Ti. sub. (1-y-y'-y") Sn. sub. y Zr. sub. y' Hf. sub. y" O. sub. 3, wherein x, x', x" and y, y', y" represent mole fractions of the divalent and tetravalent cations and x and x' have independent value greater than 0. 01 and less than 0. 3 and x", y, y' and y" have independent values greater than zero and less than 0. 3, such that the sum (x+x'+x") is greater than 0. 01 and less than 0. 4 and the sum (y+y'+y") does not exceed 0. 4. Regardless of the specific composition selected, the products of the invention have a mean primary particle size in the range of 0. 05 to 0. 4 microns with a very narrow particle size distribution. The products are dispersible so that the mean particle size determined by image anaylsis and by sedimentation are comparable.

Abstract:

A fualt-tolerant computer system provides information transfers between the units of a computing module, including a processor unit and a memory unit and one or more peripheral control units, on a bus structure common to all the units. Information-handling parts of the system, both in the bus structure and in each unit, can have a duplicate partner. Error detectors check the operation of the bus structure and of each system unit to provide information transfers only on fault-free bus conductors and between fault-free units. The computer system can operate in this manner essentially without interruption in the event of faults by using only fault-free conductors and functional units. Arbitration circuits of unusual speed and simplicity provide units of the computing module with access to the common bus structure according to the priority of each unit. The units of a module check incoming and outgoing signals for errors, signal other module units of a detected error, and disable the unit from sending potentially erroneous information onto the bus structure.

Abstract:

A digital data processing apparatus utilizes a common bus structure for transferring information between functional units, including a processing unit, a peripheral control unit, and first and second memory units. Unit-to-unit information transfers are executed on the bus structure by pipelining signals representative of a transfer cycle that occurs during plural timing intervals and includes plural phases, where the phases of one cycle are non-overlapping and occur in sequence in different respective timing intervals of the transfer cycle. A signalling element periodically generates a first signal indicative the necessity to refresh at least one dynamic memory element in the first memory unit. A memory refresh element normally responds to that first signal for executing a memory refresh cycle during at least one timing interval common to first and second pipelined transfer cycles. A signal is generated indicating the onset of the memory refresh cycle.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a variety of dispersible doped multi-component BaTiO. sub. 3 based powder compositions. The primary particles of each of the products are substantially spherical, have sizes in the range of 0. 05 to 0. 4 microns and have narrow size distributions. Further, the compositions of the primary particles, forming each powder, are comparable. The amount of dopant oxide or oxides contained in the powder composition ranges from between greater than 1 to 10 mole percent. Regardless of the dopant or dopants utilzied, all the powder compositions of the present invention are identified by the same unique morphological characteristics.
