Abstract:

Implements, particularly medical instruments, formed at least in part of elongated polymer members, exhibit high torque fidelity after processing with tension, heat, and twisting. The processing orients the polymer in generally helical paths so that torque imposed at the proximal end can be transmitted to the distal end without substantial whipping, even if the implement follows a long and tortuous pathway. Applications include medical guidewires, catheters, and driveshafts.

Abstract:

An apparatus for doctoring a roll surface including a pivot bar adapted to be mounted on a doctor back and which the pivot bar defines an upwardly projecting fulcrum. A first shelf projects forwardly beyond the fulcrum and a top plate pivotally supported on and projecting forwardly beyond the fulcrum overlies the first shelf. The top platen is held downwardly against the fulcrum. Blade support members are carried by and cooperate with the top plate to define forwardly open slots, which slots are configured and dimensioned to receive a rear edge of a forwardly projecting doctor blade. The blade support members have rearwardly projecting second shelves underlying the first shelf and a loading mechanism is interposed between the first and second shelves for pivoting the top plate on the fulcrum in a direction urging the doctor blade against the roll surface.

Novel burst-free, sustained release biocompatible and biodegrable microcapsules which can be programmed to release their active core for variable durations ranging from 1–100 days in an aqueous physiological environment. Abstract:

This invention relates to an immunostimulating composition comprising encapsulating microspheres, which may contain a pharmaceutically-acceptable adjuvant, wherein said microspheres having a diameter between 1 nanometer (nm) to 10 microns (um) are comprised of (a) a biodegradable-biocompatible poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) as the bulk matrix, wherein the relative ratio between the amount of lactide and glycolide components are within the range of 40:60 to 0:100 and wherein said poly (DL-lactide-co-glycolide) is present in an uncapped form and an end-capped form wherin a ratio of uncapped to end-capped forms is 99/1 to 1/99, and (b) an immunogenic substance comprising Colony Factor Antigen (CFA/II), hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg), or a physiologically similar antigen that serves to elicit the producton of antibodies in animal subjects. The preparation of its composition and its use as a vaccine is also disclosed.

Abstract:

A reciprocating doctor is provided for doctoring the cylindrical surface of a roll rotating about a first axis. The doctor includes a doctor back with a blade holder carrying a doctor blade. The doctor back has journals aligned on a second axis parallel to the first rotational axis of the roll. The journals are rotatably supported in sleeve bearings, and the sleeve bearings are in turn supported by diaphragms spaced along the second axis. The sleeve bearings are fixed axially on their respective journals, and the diaphragms have hub portions surrounding and fixed relative to the sleeve bearings, and peripheral portions surrounding the hub portions and fixed relative to a support structure. The diaphragms are configured to resiliently accommodate reciprocating movement of their hub portions and associated sleeve bearings relative to their peripheral portions and associated support structure. A first operating mechanism serves to rotate the doctor back about the second axis, and a second operating mechanism serves to impart reciprocating movement to the journals and their sleeve bearings along the second axis.
