The present invention provides a fragrant article that delivers fragrance over a period of time by an article comprising a polymer matrix, a fragrance and a decorative object. The decorative object is contained within a polymer matrix and in a preferred embodiment is the similar to the fragrance that is being released. The article is particularly well suited to be used as a room freshener, which because of its attractive appearance does not need to be hidden.

Abstract:

This invention relates to an immunostimulating composition comprising encapsulating microspheres, which may contain a pharmaceutically-acceptable adjuvant, wherein said microspheres having a diameter between 1 nanometer (nm) to 10 microns (um) are comprised of (a) a biodegradable-biocompatible poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) as the bulk matrix, wherein the relative ratio between the amount of lactide and glycolide components are within the range of 40:60 to 0:100 and wherein said poly (DL-lactide-co-glycolide) is present in an uncapped form and an end-capped form wherin a ratio of uncapped to end-capped forms is 99/1 to 1/99, and (b) an immunogenic substance comprising Colony Factor Antigen (CFA/II), hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg), or a physiologically similar antigen that serves to elicit the producton of antibodies in animal subjects. The preparation of its composition and its use as a vaccine is also disclosed.

Abstract:

The invention provides a universal yeast donor strain that contains a conditional centromere and a URA3 allele on every chromosome. This strain was constructed in four rounds of crosses of individual conditional chromosome strains using a novel tetrad-based screen to identify segregants in which all marked chromosomes were contained in the same spore. The invention also provides an improved high efficiency method to transfer extrachromosomal genetic material such as plasmid DNA into any strain for use with the current gene disruption libraries. The method of transfer is mating-based method which uses a kar1 plasmid donor strain that can initiate mating but cannot form a diploid and allows plasmid transfer (plasmoduction) between nuclei in the heterokaryon. kar1 matings have been used to transfer YACs between yeast strains, but previous methods required specialized genetic backgrounds in the recipient strains and suffered from high rates of spurious chromosome transfer (Hugerat, Y., et al. 1994. 22:108). Plasmoduction with the universal donor strain only requires that the recipient strain be ura3, GAL+ and have another marker available for selection of the transferred plasmid. Counterselection against every donor chromosome also limits the amount of spurious allele transfer. The universal donor strain and the method of the invention are used to screen the yeast gene disruption library with plasmid-based dominant negative alleles of various genes.

Abstract:

In a solvent extraction process for preparing microspheres of a biodegrade polymer, the improvement comprising: preparing a homogenized antigen-sucrose matrix and adding a solvent to the sucrose-antigen matrix to form a solution; preparing a solution of a biodegradable polymer by adding a solvent to the polymer; adding the biodegradable polymer solution to the antigen-sucrose solution; adding an oil to the polymer-sucrose-antigen solution to form an emulsion having a controlled viscosity that corresponds to a predetermined average particle size of distributions of microspheres of biodegradable polymers; centrifuging the emulsion of controlled viscosity and removing the supernatant to obtain microspheres of a predetermined range of particle size distributions of from about 0. 5 to about 7. 0 micrometers.

Abstract:

A moistening system for moistening the gummed flaps of envelopes being processed in a postage meter mailing machine includes a rotating endless belt extending into a liquid supply and transferring moisture to flaps pressed against it by a contoured finger positioned adjacent to the belt. The finger is curvedly bowed and twisted relative to the belt moistening surface so as to urge essentially only the gummed portion of the flap against the belt for moistening although a wide variety of envelope flap designs and sizes are processed. The endless belt may be pivotably supported to permit convenient removal of the liquid supply container. The container is part of a liquid reservoir assembly which includes a tray support for the container which requires that several motions, vertical and horizontal, be sequentially followed before the container may be removed from the machine. This minimizes inadvertent spillage. The container may have cam surfaces cooperating with complementary parts of the endless belt device to pivot it.
