Abstract:

An electrical connector having electrical conductors in a plurality of rows is provided, wherein each of the plurality of rows includes a housing and a plurality of electrical conductors. Each electrical conductor has a first contact end connectable to a printed circuit board, a second contact end and an intermediate portion therebetween that is disposed within the housing. The housing includes a first region surrounding each of the plurality of electrical conductors, the first region made of insulative material and extending substantially along the length of the intermediate portion of the electrical conductors. The housing also includes a second region adjacent the first region and extending substantially along the length of the intermediate portion of the electrical conductors. The second region is made of a material with a binder containing conductive fillers.

Abstract:

A process for manufacturing an electrical connector is described. In the preferred embodiment, the process includes the following steps: (a) providing a lead frame that has a plurality of signal conductors, where each of the signal conductors has a first contact end, a second contact end and an intermediate portion therebetween; (b) providing at least a segment of the intermediate portion of the signal conductors with solder wettable material; (c) providing an insulative housing around at least a portion of each of the plurality of signal conductors, the insulative housing providing openings through which an exposed area of each of the signal conductors is accessible, where the exposed area includes the segment of the intermediate portion with solder wettable material; (d) cutting and removing a portion of the exposed area of the signal conductors such that only a portion of the exposed area remains; and (e) attaching a passive circuit element to the remaining portion of the exposed area of each of the signal conductors.

Abstract:

An electrical contact element that solves many problems associated with making electrical connections to integrated circuit chips. The contact element fits in small areas, but in some configurations can provide compliance in multiple directions to provide the required compliance. The contacts are shaped to provide relatively large stroke and also large force for good electrical contact. Contact elements according to the invention are incorporated into contactors for making electrical contact to Ball Grid Arrays for testing. Contact elements according to the invention are also incorporated into Ball Grid Array packages, and used as a mounting point for solder balls. The contact elements make the electrical connection withstand stress associated with differential thermal expansion.
