Method And Apparatus For Operating A Self-Service Checkout System Having A Number Of Retail Terminals Associated Therewith
James Morrison - Suwanee GA John C. Addy - Lawrenceville GA Robert F. Sadler - Cumming GA
Assignee:
NCR Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
G06F 1760
US Classification:
705 23, 705 16, 902 22, 235383, 186 59, 186 64
Abstract:
A method of operating a self-service checkout system which includes a base having a scanner secured thereto includes the step of securing an itemization-only retail terminal to the base. The method also includes the step of coupling the itemization-only retail terminal to the scanner. The method further includes the step of operating the itemization-only retail terminal and the scanner so as to allow a first user to enter a first number of items for purchase into the self-service checkout system for a first time period while (i) the itemization-only retail terminal is secured to the base, and (ii) the itemization-only retail terminal is coupled to the scanner. Moreover, the method includes the step of detaching the itemization-only retail terminal from the base. Yet further, the method includes the step of decoupling the itemization-only retail terminal from the scanner. The method further includes the step of securing a full-tendering retail terminal to the base.
Antenna Systems Including Internal Planar Inverted-F Antennas Coupled With Retractable Antennas And Wireless Communicators Incorporating Same

Assignee:
Telefonaktiebolaget L.M. Ericsson - Stockholm
International Classification:
H01Q 2100
US Classification:
343725, 343700 MS, 343702
Abstract:
Antenna systems for use with wireless communicators, such as radiotelephones, are provided and include a first antenna configured to be internally mounted within a wireless communicator and a retractable, second antenna that couples with the first antenna when extended. The internal, first antenna is resonant within one or more frequency bands and the retractable, second antenna couples with the internal, first antenna so as to enhance one or more of the resonant frequency bands of the internal, first antenna.
Methods And Apparatus For Delegated Error Handling
An error delegating processing system for performing operations under control of one or more applications, with device requests being made as needed by the applications. If a device returns a normal status, processing proceeds. If a device returns an error status, a specialized error handler performs error correction. The error handler examines the error status to determine if the error interferes with continued system operation. If not, the error status is logged for later correction and control is returned to the requesting application. If the error status interferes with continued operation, the error status is further examined to determine if it is correctable by a customer. If so, the error handler gives the customer instructions for correcting the error. If the error status is not correctable by the customer, the error handler suspends system operation and issues an alert for a non-customer user to correct the error status. Once the error status is corrected, control is returned to the requesting application.

Assignee:
Ericsson Inc. - Research Triangle Park NC
International Classification:
H01Q 928
US Classification:
343795, 343702
Abstract:
An internal dipole bowtie/meander antenna for a mobile terminal is capable of operating in two distinct RF bands. The antenna includes a resonating element and a ground element positioned on opposite sides of a dielectric material. The dielectric material is positioned generally perpendicular to a ground plane of the antenna. Tuning elements may be added to vary the coupling of the antenna elements to the ground plane.
Convertible Dipole/Inverted-F Antennas And Wireless Communicators Incorporating The Same

Assignee:
Ericsson Inc. - Research Triangle Park NC
International Classification:
H01Q 148
US Classification:
455575, 455 78, 455 90, 455269, 343702, 343846
Abstract:
Multiple frequency band antennas having first and second conductive branches are provided for use within wireless communications devices, such as radiotelephones. First and second conductive branches are in adjacent, spaced-apart relationship. First and second signal feeds extend from the first conductive branch and terminate at respective first and second switches. Third and fourth signal feeds extend from the second conductive branch and terminate at respective third and fourth switches. The first and second conductive branches can jointly radiate as a dipole antenna in a first frequency band when the first and fourth switches are open, and when the second and third switches electrically connect the second and third feeds to a first receiver/transmitter. Antenna structure may be changed by reconfiguring the various switches. For example, the first and second conductive branches may radiate separately as respective inverted-F antennas, or may radiate independently as monopole antennas.

Abstract:
Multi-frequency band antennas for use within wireless communicators, such as radiotelephones, are provided and include a first conductive branch configured to radiate in a first frequency band and a second conductive branch configured to radiate in a second frequency band that is different from the first frequency band. The first conductive branch includes opposite first and second end portions and opposite first and second edge portions that extend between the first and second end portions. A notch is formed in the second edge portion adjacent the second end portion. The second conductive branch includes opposite third and fourth end portions and opposite third and fourth edge portions that extend between the third and fourth end portions. The first and second conductive branches are connected together at the first and third end portions and are configured to electrically couple at the respective second and fourth end portions. Coupling is utilized between the first and second conductive branches to achieve bandwidth and gain results desired for the antenna.
Remote Approval System And Methods For Use In Network Of Retail Checkout Terminals
In a system for processing store interventions in a network of self-checkout terminals, self-checkout terminals monitor the self-checkout activities performed to determine whether an issue has arisen requiring intervention by store personnel. Detected issues are prioritized and placed into an issues log. A remote authorization station connected into the network accesses the issues log to review and resolve the issues that have arisen in priority order. Further, where it is determined that an issue has arisen at a self-checkout terminal that cannot be resolved at that terminal, the transaction is suspended and then resumed at a personnel-operated terminal.

International Classification:
H04M 100
US Classification:
4555757, 4555521, 455121, 455129, 343908
Abstract:
Compact, planar inverted-F antennas are provided that radiate within multiple frequency bands for use within communications devices, such as radiotelephones. Multiple signal feeds extend from a conductive element in respective spaced-apart locations. A respective plurality of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) switches are electrically connected to the signal feeds and are configured to selectively connect the respective signal feeds to ground or RF circuitry. In addition, each MEMS switch can be opened to electrically isolate a respective signal feed.
